When the first coffee beans were brought over to Lantana in 1916, it was with the hope of starting a new trade. The Portuguese had been trading in this area for centuries and they knew how to roast and brew coffee. They also knew how to sell their beans, so what they did not bring over was not lost on them. The Dutch also came over at different times, but they were not as successful in selling their coffee. It is likely that the lack of success was because the Dutch did not have the same know-how or infrastructure that Portuguese people did when they came over. Coffee became popularized in Brazil after 1820 when a man by the name of Pedro Teixeira introduced it to that country from his native Portugal. He traveled throughout Brazil and saw how much people enjoyed drinking coffee and using their own hands to make it. From there, he started importing more beans and roasted them himself in his home colony of Coimbra until he finally got permission from Emperor Pedro II to start exporting his coffee! In 1899, Brazilian troops invaded Portugal; however, without Coffee, these troops would have been unable to hold off Spanish forces for very long! As a result of this invasion, Coffee began flowing into Brazil like water into an open wound! With all of this excitement going on back home in Brazil (and all around the world), Rodrigo de Magalhães decided he needed some help getting started too. Magalhães set up shop near where downtown Lantana now stands and within two years had created one of South Florida’s first commercial roasters! At its peak, maga Coffee produced about seventy thousand pounds per month! This amount may seem small today, but back then it meant a lot!
