Lantana is located on State Road 98 and State Road 614 near the Apalachicola River. Lantana began as a post office in 1918, with the name "Lenanton." In 1932 it changed to "Lanterna." In 1945 it changed to "Lantana." The present name honors General John A. Lantana who served as Commander of United States Forces in Southwest Asia during World War II and later became Commanding General, Southern Army Command. The community was founded by pioneer Dr. Virgil Waddell in 1923 as an agricultural research station on land which he had purchased from Seminole Chief Caulkett Griggs. A small shopping center and cotton gin were built around the research station.
