Lantana is a small town in Polk County, Florida, located on the banks of the St. Johns River. The population was 795 at the 2010 census. Lantana's ZIP code is 34639. The community was founded in 1899 by colonists from Brazil who named it after Lantana, a Brazilian tree that is a source of juice and oil. The first store opened in 1903. In 1907, Lantana had its first school and post office. By 1912, there were six businesses in operation with a population of 115 people. In 1948, Harry Jinkins developed a cotton gin and foundry near Lantana to increase production for local growers. Also during this time, an agreement was made between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Polk County to plant 20 acres (8 hectares) of corn for cattle feed purposes at the new site; however this project never came to fruition due to lack of funding In 1959, Hernando Gomez bought land east of Lantana from John Fenton for $2 per acre . This area became known as "Gomez Park". A water tower completed in 1960 served as the community's water source until 1984 when an electric power line arrived which replaced the pump system

The community was founded by settlers in 1836 as a small settlement on the banks of the Ochlocknee River. Lantana quickly became an important center for trade and education in the region. In 1862, Lantana was incorporated as a town and remained that way until 1971 when it became an unincorporated community. The area now known as Lantana was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. By 1800, Spanish explorers had discovered what is now Lantana and named it San Marcos de Tucuman after their patron saint. It wasn't until 1836 that colonists arrived to establish a small settlement on the banks of the Ochlocknee River. The town rapidly grew into a major commercial center due to its location at one of Florida's most strategic waterways. In 1862, Lantana was incorporation as a town with its own government; this distinction would eventually be given to neighboring Daytona Beach. Lantana played an important role during both World War I and World War II; during these conflicts, it served as an airfield, supply depot, and troop encampment. After the war ended, many residents moved away from LantANA due to lack of available employment or environmental degradation associated with post-war reconstruction policies. However, some residents decided to stay in what is today known as "The Old Town."
