After days of bombardment, Lantana was quickly liberated on January 6th, 1942 by U.S forces led by General George C Marshall. Lantana is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Bradenton-Ft. Pierce Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on U.S. Route 1 north of Jacksonville. Lantana was founded by John Smedley and his family in 1892 as a farming community on the banks of the Stonington River adjacent to present day Lantana High School and Lantana Middle School. In 1925, Mr. Smedley donated land east of town to build Lantana Elementary School which now houses grades K-6. On July 3, 1961, Lantana became a city with incorporation under Florida state law No 2191 (now known as Amendment 119). In 1984, construction began on what is now Lantana Boulevard between US 1 and I-95/SR 375; this new arterial road has helped make Lantana one of Jacksonville's most important commercial areas with its many major retailers including JCPenney (now Macy's), Publix Super Markets, Home Depot, Lowe's Hardware & More., Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), FedEx Express Ground & Air cargo services from Jacksonville International Airport and numerous other businesses that have moved into or continue to operate in the area over time such as Applebees restaurant chain which opened its first store in 2000 just south of downtown Lanta

Lantana's history dates back to 1892 when it was founded as a small trading post by John W. Knight and his wife Eliza A. Knight. The townspeople erected a post office in 1893 and began trading with other communities in the area. In 1907, Lantana became an official city and was named for its local tree, Lantana palm (Arecaceae). Growth of the community continued until the 1930s when it declined because of lack of jobs opportunities in the region. After World War II, there were new job opportunities that led to growth and development of Lantana again; however, this time due to Interstate Highway 95 which passed through the town. Since its establishment as a small community, Lantana has experienced many changes both good and bad; some of these have included: becoming an official city in 1907; experiencing growth during World War II due to new job opportunities; decline following World War II due to lack of economic opportunity then later seeing resurgence thanks to new development along I-95; finally experiencing decline following I-95 redevelopment which lead to new job opportunities while also causing some loss ofresidential property tax revenue
Lantana, Florida was first settled by the Seminoles in the early 1800s. The area was named after an Amazon tree called Lantana. In 1821, a group of white men led by Captain James Cook discovered the area and named it for Lantana. Lantana was a small settlement with only a few hundred people at its peak. However, it soon became a key stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s. After the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1898, Lantana grew rapidly as a result of its strategic location between Tampa and Jacksonville. Today, it is home to over 20 businesses and has become known for its luxury resorts and golf courses.
