Lantana is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Johns City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lantana is located on U.S. Route 301 and State Road 327 east of Jacksonville and northwest of St. Augustine.[2] Lantana was founded in 1905 by Agrarian League settlers[3] as a stop on the old alignment of US 301 between Jacksonville and St Augustine,[4] then known as Commercial Road Junction (now US-301).[5][6] The name "Lantana" may be derived from a Seminole word meaning "a palm tree that produces fruit in early summer".[7][8] The first post office called Lantana was established in 1907,[9][10] but its first residents were not until 1910 when John Breen settled there with his wife Alice[11][12]. In 1912, James Dooley moved to Lantana from New York City with his family to start an agricultural company which became Dooley's Land Company[13], later renamed Dooley Brothers Farms.[14] The Community School District No. 2 erected its first schoolhouse in 1917[15], one year after it consolidated with the district's other schools and became Lantanas Community School District Number 2[16]. In 1933, Dr Jock Mahoney – namesake of Mahoney's Drive – arrived at Lantana from Pensacola and started spreading citrus crops there while also conducting research into new cold storage techniques for food preservation; these days, Mahoney Park is home to several restaurants including Joe's Crab Shack & Grille & Barbecue, Applebee's wings/tennis/dancing shoes store Buffet BBQ & Grill, Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches - all within walking distance of each other across Mahoney Boulevard. As more people arrived in the area during the 1930s they began settling down around clusters of homes built along lakeshore or near railroad tracks; today this rural landscape continues with several small towns dottingFlorida countryside
