Lantana is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Lantana was founded in 1913 by John W. Noonan and his brother-in-law, Michael J. Noonan as a citrus grove on Post Road between Utopia and Lantana. The name "Lantana" comes from the Seminole Indian word meaning "place where oranges grow." The first grove was destroyed by fire in 1916 but John Noonan rebuilt it with help from some of his friends including Harry Finch and Julius Rosenwald who had purchased land along the road for citrus production. By 1920, there were five orange orchards with a total production of about 2 million pounds of fruit per year. In 1924, Harry Finch donated another acre to Lantana which became known as "Finch Orchard No. 3." The Orchards produced an additional 400 thousand pounds of fruit per year until 1957 when a hurricane caused significant damage to the infrastructure which led to a steep decline in production over the next few decades; however, during that time period many residents came together to form what would become known as the "First Generation" of Lantanaians who had come up through the ranks of local businesses and government organizations during this time period such as: First Lady Betty Finch (1927 – 2002), Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska) (1940 – present), Mayor Larry Smith (D-Fla.), Mrs. William Humble (1929 – 2006) and Mrs. Ollie Olsen (1921 -present). Lantana was founded in 1928 by two brothers, Fenton and Floyd Lantz. The family operated a small grocery store on the corner of Southeastern Parkway and Rural Highway until they founded their own business in 1938. They renamed it Lantana Fresh Fruit & Vegetables. In 1952, the company became a subsidiary of J.P. Morgan & Co., which helped make it one of the first major Florida businesses to be acquired by a corporate giant. In 1957, Lantana merged with another successful Florida grocery chain, Gulf Grocery Company, becoming Lantana/Gulf Grocery Corporation. In 1970, Gulf Grocery merged with Safeway Incorporated to form Safeway/Lantana Stores Incorporated; this company was later sold to Kroger Co., Inc. in 1987.
