The Largo Air Force Station Gift History begins in 1947 when the United States Air Force leased land from the City of Largo. The first gift was a Model A-4M Flying Fortress airplane which was donated by Colonel Denton W. Comstock, Jr., USAF (Ret). The second gift was a Lockheed P-2 Neptune patrol plane which was donated by Major General John H. Grimes, USAF (ret), Commander Ninth Air Force at Largo AFB. In 1969, the station became part of Tactical Air Command and received an F-111A Super Eagle fighter jet as a gift from TacticalAir Command Headquarters, Tampa FL. In 1990, the station became an independent air force command and received its own Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft as a gift from United States Strategic Command Headquarters Washington DC. On 1 July 1992, Largo AFB gained its current name of Joint Base St Petersburg - Clearwater (JBS-C) and became one of the largest military installations in Florida with over 100 000 active duty military personnel and civilians employed on over 5070 acres of land.
Largo, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 10,731 at the 2010 census. Largo is home to the Largo Marine Terminal and several golf courses as well as a low-income housing complex called Babylon Gardens. Largo was founded in 1892 by J.D. Payne and Hilda Payne as a landing for canoes on the St Petersburg River. It became an important shipping point for salt water fishermen and became a resort town after World War II when it became known for its golf courses, shopping centers, and hospitals. The community changed hands several times until it was purchased by developer Harry Sperling in 1978 and renamed "Largo." In 1990s Largo experienced another growth spurt with construction of new homes and businesses along Gulf Freeway which caused its population to grow from 8,000 to 12,000 over the next decade. In 2013 Largo announced that it would be moving out of its Naval Air Station (NAF) facility following years of struggles with budget cuts and maintenance issues related to windsocks that interfered with jet operations at NAF's nearby Clearwater Naval Air Station (CNR). The move signals the end of an era for Largo when its military presence helped make it one of Pinellas County's most economically vibrant communities – until then it had been home to only lightindustrial jobs associated with naval shipyards used primarily by Tampa Bay Shipbuilding Company (TBSD) Inc., who now occupy part of their former site off US Highway 1 north of downtown Largo

Largo is a community in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. Largo was founded on December 12, 1892 by J.A. Larrabee and his family as an agricultural center on the I-95 corridor between Naples and Marco Island to house workers who were needed to build the new railroad line that connected those two areas. The name "Largo" comes from Spanish meaning "a place where there are many trees." The town grew rapidly thanks to its location on the route connecting Naples with Marco Island, as well as its proximity to Interstate 95. Largo became a major commercial and residential center during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its status as a transportation hub for both mainland Naples and Marco Island. In 1908, Largo acquired its own post office which remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1945. During World War II, Largo played an important role in both the supply of munitions for Allied forces fighting in Europe and also served as a headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur's Southwest Pacific Command during his campaign against Japan. After the war, Large continued to grow as a result of new industrial development along I-95 west of town; this growth led to increased traffic congestion which contributed significantly to local decline during the 1970s and 1980s. However, recent economic development has revitalized Largo and has returned it back into positive standing within Collier County Since 2000, much focus has been placed upon redeveloping downtown Largo into an attractive nightlife district flanked by several high-end hotels including The Miami Beach Hotel & Casino (formerly known as Wynn Entertainment), Regal Resort & Casino (formerly known as Omni ), [and] Hard Rock International . Additionally , additional light industry businesses such as drywall stores have opened up in recent years . This influx of new business has helped revive downtown’s fortunes since 2001 when then Mayor Tom Barrasso designated downtown “the NIGHTLINE District” . During Hurricane Irma , many residents chose notto evacuate their homes – some choosing instead to stay behind while their homes were damaged or destroyed – resulting in what may be one of largest such voluntary rescues ever conducted in Florida history[1]. Ultimately , only about 500 people chose notto evacuate[2], most of whom left before any damage had been done inside their homes[3].
