The first human habitation in Largo was founded by Indian traders on the now-demolished Plantation Key Trading Post on November 17, 1821. The post sat overlooking the Pensacola River and served as an important transportation and trade center for Native American and Spanish settlers during the 1830s and 1840s. A second trading post, Fort Brooke, was also established here in 1847 by Captain James Dickey and his troops during the Seminole Wars. By 1860, Largo had become a thriving black community with its own schools, churches, businesses and homes. African Americans continue to make significant contributions to Largo's history through their work in local businesses and services throughout its many years of growth. During World War II Japanese nationals were interned at nearby Ft Myers Naval Base under conditions that weregruesomely inhuman; one report from 1942 lists deaths from pneumonia as one reason for being crowded into inadequate barracks with no air conditioning or exercise facilities available to them whatsoever! In 1945 this base was closed after Japan's surrender; however within days of its closure large numbers of Japs had already begun arriving in town seeking refuge from Allied forces occupying Japan who wereBlockading their ports! In 1948 when Jacksonville became an independent city it annexed much of Lee County including parts of Gainesville which bordered Fort Myers to the north-west - giving Largo a mix of new residents while keeping Fort Myers' population intact (Fort Myers would later annex most of unincorporated Pinellas County). Today though much has changed with more than 10K people living in just over 1M square feet downtown since 2008 - Downtown Living has taken hold & will only continue grow as more & more people move into Downtown areas all around our state! Largos rich history began long before humans settled hereabouts... back when there dwelt several different tribes who ventured downriver from what is now modern day Alabama preying on various natural resources such as cranberry vines etc., but mostly hunting bear due to their vast bounty found near Mobile Bay where these animals roamed freely for months at a time without fear or consequence(according to some reports)! One account tells how upon hearing about this abundant resource they met up along side several other groups near Mobile Pointe whereupon splitting into 2 teams each set out tracking down whichever resource they discovered first! From what we can tell it seems like they did quite well because not only did they manage to capture enough material but also managed to return safely back home!! So yeah definitely something went wrong back then didn't it? Anyway continuing onward… after finding this valuable resource man started building himself some pretty nifty things out Of wood he collected+ such as houses/motels/boats etc.(which are still standing today) so needless to say thanks go out To those early pioneers who made sure that today’s citizens enjoy all thatJacksonville hasto offer!!!
