Largo, Florida is a small town located in Panhandle County, Florida. The population was 7,692 at the 2000 census. Largo is the county seat of Panhandle County and has a total area of only 9 square miles. The town was founded on December 12, 1892 by J.P. Mahoney and his brother-in-law Pee Wee Stephenson from Indiana as an agricultural community for white farmers who were moving into the area after being driven out of their own settlements in the Seminole Nation Territory east of Tampa Bay. In 1908, Largo became a city with a population of 20,000 people when it amalgamated with neighboring St Petersburg to form the City of Tampa. The history of Largo goes back to 1892 when J.P. Mahoney and Pee Wee Stephenson founded the town in order to provide better access to white farming families who had just arrived in the panhandle region following years of forced relocation under Indian Bureau rule east of Tampa Bay. At that time, only a few hundred white residents lived in what is now Panhandle County - most were farmers who had recently moved into this new land during or shortly after World War I following advances made by American technology and exploration throughout much of South America and parts of Central America which led to huge displacements within traditional cultures living near these regions during that time frame Largo initially consisted primarilyof two blocks: Broadway and SE 4th Street which served as its downtown core while several other smaller streets stretched out around it serving as residential areas for workers commuting into downtown Tampa or for those living close enough to work but not too close for shopping or recreational purposes . Within a few years however, A&W Restaurants opened up shop on Broadway followed by Sears & Roebuck before finally developing what would become known as "The Strip" - an important commercial district extending from NE 2nd Street northward along 21st Avenue until it met US 1 at SW 15th Street (now part Of Pinellas Park) making it one stoplight away from downtown Tampa In addition to its importance as an economic center due largely to its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Tampa and St Petersburg, Largo also played host to numerous events over the years including state fairs (1902-2004), auto shows (1904-2004), jazz festivals (1972-1999), golf tournaments (1964-1982), college football games (1979-2005) among others It also became home base for many local businesses such as Waffle House (#1 restaurant chain in US) which operated there until 1984; Bankers Trust (#2 bank based in US); Ford dealership #5; Radio Shack; Buick dealership #7 among others As more suburban communities began sprouting up around TampaBay both within Hillsborough County proper and adjacent Pinellas Park since World War II – often built on former agricultural land – much attention was paid towardsLargo given its relatively small size relative to these larger municipalities However even though development pressures have increased somewhat over recent decades due largelyto increasing competition from developments closer unto urban centers – especially Jacksonvilleustration@uflorida/Flickr - panhandlecountytampa
