Largo is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Largo was founded in 1898 by J.C. Barnwell and became a city on December 1, 1928. It adopted its present name, Largo, in 1969 after being selected as one of two finalists for the name "Florida's most beautiful city". The first inhabitants of what would become Largo were Native American Seminole who hunted and gathered there for food before European explorers arrived in the 17th century. In 1929, during the Great Depression, local businessmen pooled their resources to purchase City Hall from Mayor John Tunnell; renamed it Municipal Building No 2 and began construction on what would become one of South Florida's largest municipal buildings which opened in 1933; cost $5 million ($ when measured against today's prices). The building housed both City Hall Annex (1933-1966), City Council Chambers (1966-1973), Police Department Headquarters (1973-present) and Fire Department Station No1/2 (1975-present).
