The population of Largo was 953 as of 2010. The name "Largo" comes from a Seminole word meaning "a good place to stay." In its early days, Largo was known as a trading post for saltwater traders between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. It was during this time that Largo began to be called "Theopolis," after Plato's city in Greece. Largo became an important industrial center in Florida during the late 1800s when it became home to a number of companies manufacturing goods such as cotton textiles, shoes, cigars, whiskey, cattle feed, and other products. By 1930, Largo had become one of Florida's leading cities with a population over 10,000. However, due to increasing competition from more populous cities such as Miami and Tallahassee, Largo experienced rapid decline during the 1940s and 50s. In recent years however, growth has begun once again in Largo with new development projects being announced for both commercial and residential areas. This growth has led to increased business opportunities for those who live or work in Largos downtown core which continues to be one of its primary attractions for tourists and residents alike. One recent development that has grabbed attention is Ponce City Market which is located just east of downtown on Ponce de Leon Boulevard. With over 1 million square feet (1002 m²) devoted exclusively to retail space including restaurants and stores ranging from high end concepts like Saks Fifth Avenue brand store111111111 (owned by Macy's Inc.) up through medium Priced chains like JCPenneyand Sears Holdings Corporation., Ponce City Market is quickly becoming one of Florida's major shopping centers second only to Miami Beach!

Largo, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 5,181 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Largo were Creek Indians who lived there for many years before white settlement began in the area. In 1834, Captain John Denton chartered a vessel called "Villa Rica" and set out to explore what would become Pinellas County. He discovered an abundance of natural resources and decided to establish a colony on Stonington Island (now Largo). In 1835, Denton's colonists built their first house and developed their land until 1840 when they bought more land from the Seminole tribe. By 1850, Largo had grown into a small town with over 100 citizens. The post office was established in 1851 and named after Commodore David Porter Viscount Haddock (1811-1897), Jr., commander of HMS "HMS Victory" during the Peninsular War (1804-1809). In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Florida and invaded Pinellas County while under orders from General Robert E. Lee to march through Tampa Bay to Mobile Bay to attack Union troops stationed there. While en route to his destination, General Beauregard ordered General James Longstreet's Confederate army encampment at Fernandina Beach south of Tampa to be destroyed because it posed a threat to Federal forces moving through that region transporting supplies back and forth between Tampa Bay and Chattanooga across Lake Michigan. On April 17th 1865, General Longstreet's army reached Largo just as Union troops were preparing for battle against them near Clearwater beachfront where they were eventually slaughtered by Confederate cavalry units commanded by Major Richard Biddle including future Congressman John Pemberton who lost an arm fighting in this engagement Aftermath: On April 19th 1865 Confederate general Robert E Tallmadge surrendered at Fort Brooke onshore off Clearwater beach after spending three days Siegeing this garrison which included losing 1/3 its strength due mainly due To Disease caused By yellow Fever then later died from it himself aged 53 yrs old
Largo was founded in 1892 by John P. Largo, a citrus grower and politician who served as the first mayor of Tampa. The city grew rapidly during the early 20th century, thanks to its location on the shores of Tampa Bay and its access to profitable maritime industries. By World War II, Largo had become one of Florida's most prosperous cities, thanks in part to its status as a key military port. In the 1960s and 1970s, however, Largo began experiencing rapid decline as a result of economic stagnation and population loss. Today, the city is located largely within Tampa's boundaries but retains a significant amount of cultural and historical significance.
