Largo is a town located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach Combined Statistical Area. Largo was founded in 1909 by Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America members and their families. The name came from Largo Point on the Intracoastal Waterway where they could see Union ships coming in to load cotton goods for export. The original town was located on Largo Key, now known as Bay Head Island. In 1924, when LargoKey was annexed into Palm Beach County, it became the administrative center of that county and Largo remained its primary cultural and commercial center until the early 2000s when both those functions were transferred to West Palm Beach. During World War II, Largo played an important role as an Army airfield serving Nazi Germany with both military and civilian aircraft including Boeing B-17 bombers which dropped supplies to German forces fighting in North Africa and Europe during the war. As a result of its strategic location at one of three airfields used by NATO forces RAF Fairford (near London), RAF Merville (in Normandy) and RAF Hingham (in Suffolk), Largo became known as "The Air Capital of America." In recent years, much development has occurred within the limits of what was once a largely rural community: a new shopping mall called Rangy's opened in 2007; Qatar Airways set up shop here in 2009; Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein's house burned down in 2015; major renovations are currently underway to make way for Fordson Raceway NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing being held there from 2018-2022; and plans are being made for another shopping mall nearby which would anchor a mixed-use development that would include office space, housing units and restaurants/bars/cafés slated to open around 2019 or 2020. Largo is home to several schools including Palm Beach Gardens High School which offers classes ranging from elementary through college level; Coral Gables Senior High School offering grades 9th - 12th; Plantation School for Boys & Girls also offer grades 9th - 12th; Lakeside Christian Academy offers PreKindergarten through 8th grade along with postsecondary education opportunities such as online learning courses available throughout the school year.; numerous small businesses dotting key intersections throughout downtown such as McFarlane's pet supply store chain (since moved out); local banks like First National Bank have large branchesadjacent to main streets providing convenient ATM availability.; two parks serve residents: Barron Park adjacent to I-95 exit 4A off US 1 southbound near Broward Boulevard entrances while Floridian Hills park located eastside on NW 2nd Street opposite I-95 exit 5A provides access across SW 7 Mile River undeveloped land parcel between NW 3rd Ave N & SSE corner Blvd., containing public tennis courts & playgrounds., 3 golf courses within easy reach: Ponte Vedra Golf Course just northwest of downtown off US 1 about halfway between I-95 exits #5A & #6AExit 7B As early as 1857 there were reports indicating Indian traders had been trading saltwater crocodiles en route from India upriver all the way down into Cuba Harbor
