Largo, Florida is a small municipality located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Largo is part of the Jacksonville-Port St. Lucie-Monroe Combined Statistical Area. Largo is bordered by the Canaveral National Seashore to the north and east and Gulf Breeze to the south. The first Europeans to visit Largo were Spanish explorers in 1565 when they named it "Hernando de Soto's Landing". In 1821, A.J. Beall built a steamboat dock on what is now UF campus for use by fishermen from Pensacola who used the tidal stream that passed through Largo as their port of call for fishing trips into Mobile Bayou from Escambia County and Cuba. In 1886, J.D White purchased land east of present day Main Street which became known as White Sands Plantation after he developed it into a plantation with many fruit trees including plums and apricots that are popular today among consumers in Naples and other areas around Clearwater Beach where he had plantations near his homeport of Tampa Bay. He also owned lands west of Main Street along Lake Okeechobee which became known as West Palm Beach Plantation after him and his family bought some land there in 1892 from Wm Hixon Jr., one of Tampa Bay's early sugar planters; this area became one of Hillsborough County's earliest towns when it was organized on February 14, 1894 following an act by Governor George Biddle (D). The original town center was located on what is now Lee Road just west of State Road 498 between Third Avenue South (now Fourth Avenue South) and First Avenue North (now University Boulevard). Largo is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. Largo is located on State Road 727, about thirteen miles (19 km) north of Fort Lauderdale and about fifteen minutes' drive from Miami Beach. The first Europeans to visit Largo were two Spanish traders, Francisco de la Torre and Juan Bautista de las Casas, in 1795. The name "Largo" was first given by José Angel Pérez y Costilla to a tract of land that he had purchased near what is now called Pinecrest Drive in 1824 from the Seminole Nation. In 1835 Largo became a parish within the Roman Catholic Diocese of West Palm Beach; it was elevated to an independent municipality in 1912. In 1901 Largo annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Dania and Hollywood for municipal services which were then available only through individual townships or villages within Broward County. These annexations were ratified by referendum vote on November 3rd, 1901 but no action was taken until 1907 when an act was passed by the county commissioners establishing that annexation would be automatic if there were no objections from any village or township officials who desired it not to become so. On October 25th 1909, voters in both villages voted overwhelmingly against annexation intobrowardcounty because they felt that this would increase their taxes heavily while decreasing their powerless contribution to county government thereby impairing its ability to provide necessary public services such as education, fire protection and street cleaning etc.; however largostate withstood these efforts and annexation took place without objection on November 3rd following a request made by county commissioners." On December 1st 1913 Largo became one of three municipalities withinFortLauderdale-Hollywood MSA which joined together as a single city under the name "Broward City". With this merger came increased funding for municipal services including complete streetlights (this had been requested several times by citizens but never granted), public schools and road maintenance; however growth also led to problems such as traffic congestion on State Road 727 which caused many residents to flee their homes during rush hour traffic jams similar to those experienced today outside of downtown Fort Lauderdale where many people still live today despite all attempts by authorities to fix the issue."
