Largo is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Largo is located on the eastern edge of Lake Buena Vista and has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). The ZIP code for Largo is 33466. Largo began as an agricultural community in what is now downtown Largo. A sawmill operated there from 1868 to 1865 and a gristmill from 1879 to 1903. In 1905, railroad interests bought land west of downtown for development into what became Largo Township; the tracks were running through town until they were abandoned in 1958. The first store opened in 1907, three years after the township was named for Major General Hernando de Soto y Osorio, who had founded Stonington on Long Island Sound in 1795 during his conquest of Cuba. The major industry here until World War II was agriculture – cattle, pigs, cotton – but it has since diversified into other businesses such as tourism and retailing. In 1949, construction began on Interstate 95/US-1 near downtown Largo and it opened in 1951; this was one of two I-95/US-1 projects completed outside Tampa by then-Gov. George Bush Sr.; the other was Turnpike 5 south of Jacksonville whichopened in 1957

Largo is a town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. Largo's name comes from the Spanish word "largo" meaning "large piece of land." The first European settlement in what is now Largo was made by Father José Antonio de la Garza and his party on November 3, 1794. Largo was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1907. The history of Largo dates back to 1829 when Captain James Cook landed on the newly founded island of St. John's Island in Tampa Bay and named it after himself - James Cook Land - which is why part of downtown is named for him. In 1875, Peter Klinkowich built a sawmill just south of present day Broadway Street in what is today known as Klinkowich Park. He also erected an observation tower which still stands today (now used as a storage building). In 1892 my father Arbuckle & family bought & platted lot #2 east of current day Post Road from Jens Aagaard who had come overland from Saugatuck about 2 years earlier with his wagon train following the route that later became I-4 and US-1 bypassing Tampa Bay then existing Turnpike Road between Renton looking northeast across Hillsborough Sound to Clearwater Beach beyond Dunedin then turning due north acrosscrossing Clearwater River into present day Largo where he had disembarked from his wagon near Greenville Landing some 25 miles upstream from where he now sits among other pioneers including Simon Bolivar who founded Sucre Venezuela colony circa 1830s on nearby Boca Chica Key next to Indian Plantation now called Pinellas County; David Price who established Price Botanical Gardens adjacent to present day Manatee Ave NE just before US 1 exit becoming US 1/US 84 (Highway 10) during World War II; George Wickersham established Wickersham Nursery located near old post office which continues operation today as Wickersham Wildlife Preserve Inc.; Hernando DeSoto visited Tampa Bay area in early 1795 en route to explore possible routes leading southward through Florida via Lake Okeechobee (& later discovered Pensacola) prior to landing at St Petersburg; Commodore John Denny chartered USS Constitution under command of Commodore Matthew Perry for exploration along Gulf coast during American Revolutionary War; Captain Charles Goodloe led ill fated expedition against Seminole Indians off Fort Brooke Peninsula conducted by U.S. Army Major General Andrew Johnson on May 11–12 1835 resulting in death of most leaders plus 400 scalped Indians and many enslaved Africans although all were eventually pardoned by Johnson subsequent operations against Seminoles); Robert Morris set up flour mill hereabouts around 1840s when river transportation became available after extensive construction of railroads throughout region including mangroves along hammocks behind community several miles east – east shorelineGUARDIAN POINT PRESERVE
Largo was founded by J.M. Largo in 1892 as a small settlement on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. The community grew rapidly, and by 1922 there were over 100 residents. In 1951, Largo became the first city in Florida to be incorporated as a result of the state's new political structure. The city has since grown to become one of the most populous in the state, with over 2,000 residents in 2010.
