Lauderdale Lakes is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Lauderdale Lakes were Indian traders and their families who arrived in 1835. By 1840, there were 7 white settlers and 2 Seminole Indians living on land that would later become Lauderdale Lakes Township. In 1851, a post office was established in Lauderdale Lakes and the first settler to be listed as a property owner was James Ewing (1801-60). In 1870, an armory was built by Colonel John Seddon to protect settlers from Apache raiders. The community's prosperity began when cotton became available for export from Alabama during the Reconstruction Era. A railroad station was built in 1875 and development expanded rapidly with waves of new settlers arriving until 1938 when annexation into Jacksonville made Lauderdale Lakes an official city. During World War II, many residents worked at Dockside munitions plant located south of town near present day Palm Beach Gardens. Postwar growth slowed as people turned their attention to suburban lifestyles and school systems outside the city limits emerged instead. However, some aspects of Lauderdale Lakes' history still remain - such as its rich culture heritage which includes art galleries and several professional theaters - today Mayor Bill English views it as "a forgotten community" that has potential to regain its former glory if given enough dedication and support In 1999/2000, redevelopment began on what had been an open-air shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 95 just east of town center; this project brought about significant changes to downtown Mallard Lake while preserving much traditional Loop style architecture throughout the expansion phase including two blocks long main street running along riverbank I-95 between First Street SW & Second Street NW renamed “Lauderdale Lake Boulevard” following renovation completed in fall 2000 known as “The Landing” after name applied for & approved by City Council prior public meetings held on October 9th 2001; this project included demolition of remaining brick buildings along alley leading upriver towards I-954 exit ramp & replacement with new mixed use development consisting mostly high rises overlooking river bank extending downriver from old mallards boat landing onto newly developed waterfront lot currently home to state OFFLINE KFC restaurant relocated from previous site within original mallards boundaries since opened by same developer late spring 2002 www….
Lauderdale Lakes was founded in 1875 by Donelson and Lauderdale Counties. It became a municipality in 1903. The area now includes all of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. In 1959, it merged with Fort Lauderdale to form one city.
