The general and his unit were visiting Fort Myers as part of their training exercises before deploying to Europe. The second deployment was to Hollywood Park Naval Air Station located northeast of Fort Myers. This deployment included participation in aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CVN-70) and USS Lexington (CV-14). The carrier air groups flew missions against Japanese targets throughout 1942-1945 inclusive escort duties for Allied bombers flying over Japan during Operation Crossroads which aimedto end World War Two by occupying Japan's home islands including Okinawa Island therefore reducing Japanese army strength and capabilities overall In 1944, gifts from American soldiers stationed abroad became available so civilians could also send items such as food parcels or clothing donations back home with hope that these donations would be used towards helping those impacted by World War II . Lauderdale Lakes was founded in 1881 by bounty hunter and landowner J. P. Lauderdale as a small community on the now-defunct Caloosahatchee River. The town quickly grew to become a popular tourist destination, with its beautiful natural landscape and rich history. In 1916, Lauderdale Lakes became an incorporated city, and over the years has undergone numerous growth and development changes. Today, the city is known for its vibrant culture, picturesque surroundings, and convenient location within Florida's major metropolitan areas. Lauderdale Lakes was originally inhabited by Native Americans who hunted game in the area today known as Broward County. In 1881, J.P. Lauderdale purchased 1,000 acres of land at present-day Lauderdale Lakes from Miami traders for $1 per acre. The site would later become one of South Florida's most important fishing grounds thanks to its plentiful anchovies and other seafood resources. By 1916, when Lauderdale Lakes became an incorporated city, it had already established itself as a major vacation spot for Floridians looking for stunning natural landscapes and rich history despite the difficult living conditions associated with farming country during that time period (the early 20th century). In 1922, Jacksonville native Sunbeam Television Corporation moved its operations from Jacksonville tobroward county to establish a broadcasting center on 7 miles of beachfront property near where Ocala now stands (Ocala later became part of Gainesville). At that time Lauderdale Lakes was only a small townsite numbering around 100 people; however by 1967 it had grown to over 3200 residents with over 350 businesses located throughout downtown core including several banks which still operate today (the former First National Bank building is currently home to Jupiter law firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP). During this time too downtown experienced significant growth with new construction projects such as the addition of two: an ordinance library/museum complex in 1963 (now occupied by Hillsborough Community College) along with another large shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 95 – both are still operating today (/Former Sunbeam TV Center Annexe - now Donelson Mall.). The late 1960s through the early 1970s were some of South Florida's most challenging times economically due primarily to rapid population growth coupled with high levels of inflation which caused purchasing power parity problems across different economic groups across different regions in our state (see "Economic stressorsduring selected years" below). However through hard work and dedication by many individuals prominent in local government including Mayor John Asheton; developers; bankers; civic leaders & school board members alike issues like minimum wage hikes; rising fuel prices etcetera slowly started taming these wilder aspects of our recent past while also creating opportunities for everyday citizens thru entrepreneurship etcetera so that during this era we actually enjoyed some stability thru increased job opportunities whereas pre-recession times looked more chaotic hence causing social unrest (& more crime) ). Despite these challenges legislative efforts were made continued education funding was maintained via specialsession legislation passed unanimously by both houses following allegations made against then Tallahassee City Councilman Cecil Slade (& eventually Beachwood Mayor Jeff Gatti)). Lauderdale Lakes was created in 1868 and named for James Fenton Lauderdale, a Florida landowner. The first residents of Lauderdale Lakes were farmers who grew corn, cotton, and other crops. The area became an important military base during the Spanish-American War because it had severe limitations on supplies available from Jacksonville. In 1898, Lauderdale Lakes was renamed Fort Lauderdale after its founder, General John A. Hardee. After World War II, the area became a major shopping center with stores such as Sears, JCPenney and Macy's opening their doors there. The population of the city exploded in the 1960s with large numbers of people moving to Fort Lauderdale from all over Florida. In recent years, however,Fort Lauderdale has experienced a decline in traffic and business options as new developers have moved into the city limits
