The United States Army has been present in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida since the early 1800s. The first military post in the area was Fort Brooke on Pensacola Bay. In 1819, the U.S. Marine detachment at Fort Brooke served as a garrison for troops manning an American ship that had stopped off on its way to Cuba. This outpost became known as "Fort Brooke Marines." In 1830, General Andrew Jackson's Legion of Volunteers arrived in Broward County and began recruiting soldiers here. On Christmas Day 1830, the enrollment at Fort Brooke increased from 12 to 36 men when Major John Moultrie donated land for a barracks and parade ground. The Marines were redesignated as infantry and soon became part of the 1st Infantry Regiment (Florida) under Colonel James Ketchum. In 1836, Colonel Ketchum organized what would become the 3rd Infantry Regiment (Florida) which included elements from both the 2nd Infantry Regiment (Ohio) and 1st Infantry Regiment (Florida). On November 14th of that year, General Bragg authorized purchase of 900 acres north of town for use as a military reservation known as "Willow Park." Ft Brooke was renamed Camp Atalan after this purchase but by 1840 it had been abandoned again because no soldier could be found to garrison it properly! It wasn't until 1861 that Ft Brooke finally saw action when Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked NAS Jacksonville with over 6,000 troops including artillery pieces and cavalry! After some hard fighting, Union forces drove Confederate defenders back into positions they had held before being pushed all the way upriver towards Tampa! It didn't take long for Confederate reinforcements to arrive – within two days they had doubled their original force! The battle lasted all day Saturday September 25th and eventually resulted in about 50 killed/wounded/captured with no Union casualties reported! Despite this bad news, Confederate President Jefferson Davis ordered his general Joseph Ewell to continue attacking even though he knew he couldn't win!!! Aftermath: Over 40000 casualties on both sides with 3000 Federal dead-nearly one-third of Jacksonville’s population!! It is estimated that almost 60% of all Jaguars died during this engagement !! As time passed more soldiers were needed so Ft Brooke was again abandoned again in 1865 but it was reactivated February 7th 1865 when 8800 enlisted men entered from Mobile Alabama under command of Captain J C Boyd who led them across Pensacola Bay Bridge into town ready for duty against rebels entrenched at Hillsborough Heights south side Of town. Unfortunately Capt Boyd's unit disembarked too late due to weather conditions preventing them from getting further inland so only 1500 men reached city limits where they engaged Rebel forces skirmishing along US Highway 301 until eveningfall leaving behind many sick & wounded open water crossings making navigation very difficult

The United States Army Garrison in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida was established in 1881. The first unit to arrive was the 1st Battalion, Florida Volunteers. The battalion became the 8th Regiment, Florida Infantry on October 15, 1881. On January 6, 1886 the regiment became part of the 1st Brigade in the 3rd Division and served with distinction until 1898 when it was disbanded because of World War I. In 1920 the regiment re-formed as part of Commandos West Indies and served until 1935 when it became a ranger battalion at Fort Brooke barracks in Miami Beach. In 1949 it was again redesignated as an infantry regiment and served until 1957 when it converted to a commando battalion and continued to serve until 1966 when it transitioned back to an infantry regiment.
Lauderdale Lakes, Florida is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is the only municipality in Broward County. Lauderdale Lakes is bordered by South Lake Worth on the north, Westpark on the east and southeast, and Fort Lauderdale to the south. Lauderdale Lakes began as a hamlet on what is now Uptown Boulevard near Lauderhill Mall. In 1906 it became a city when it was annexed by Fort Lauderdale. On December 5, 2007, Lauderdale Lakes annexd North Lauderdale for $253 million making it one of Floridas largest cities without any extraterritorial jurisdiction over its citizens. As of the 2010 census there were 2,986 people living in Lauderdale Lakes with 1% of its land used for agricultural purposes (1 acre or less out of every 100 acres). The first settler in what would become Lauderdale Lakes was George Parkes who arrived from England in 1837 and platted what is today downtown Lauderhill with two lots measuring thirteen and four dollars each. From 1839-1840 General Lewis Cass came to this area and built his plantation known as Arabella Plantation which lay just outside present day Lauderdale Lakes limits on Broward Boulevard between Pompano Beach Road and Sunrise Highway/4th Street NW; however he never lived there himself but left instructions that his slaves should live there until their natural death! Over time various others followed including John Cockerill who purchased Arabella from General Lewis Cass in 1865; Jno Haggerty who bought property adjoining Cass’s plantation from him c1874-1876; Wm Seymour who acquired part of this land from Haggerty c1900-1901; James Herrington who acquired another tract adjacent to Arabella from Colonel Seymour c1905-1907; Arthur Eaves whose purchase included 3/2 mile section southwest of present day Arabselle Road northeast of Sunrise Highway/4th Street NW also known as “The Herrington Farm” c1920s thru 1930s etc.; finally Drury & Co., builders of Miami Beach’s first concrete building (Stratford Building) erected here circa 1925 did business here too prior to that date! Today’s buildings number more than 50 dating back to those early days! Boulevard Avenue was added to the city boundary around 1910 when Ft Dade annexed it eastward along with other unincorporated areas eastward extending into Broward County including: SW 4th St NW (now Hollywood Blvd), Morningside Ave SE (now Aventura Rd),SW 7th St NE (now Coral Gables Rd),NE 6th St NE (now Glencliff Rd) etc….. Edward Ladd had purchased lands contiguous with present day downtown Lauderhill from Colonel Seymour for $500 per acre in 1909………. When Hurricane Andrew struck Ft Dade May 15 1992nd properties within city boundaries were destroyed or heavily damaged by storm surge inundating streets leading up into neighborhoods such as Supervising Engineer Richard Strauss Engineers office located at 1100 N US 1st Ave #1010 inside City Limits then Flooding ensued resulting in Loss Of Life And Property valued at nearly $100M These losses were repaired & reopened within weeks following hurricane ending approximately 10 years later….. Development has been continuous since then primarily through private enterprise…………… Asphalt paving began operations here nearCommercial 300 SSE corner US 1st Ave & Boulevard Ave Sept 1949….. Today nearly all construction taking place within City Limits takes place through our company alone……………………………………………………….

In the 1920s and early 1930s, Lauderdale Lakes experienced significant economic decline due to its proximity to the Everglades Agricultural District and World War II-related production shortages inFlorida. However, by 1945 it had regained some of its lost economic importance as a major citrus-producing area in central Florida
