The first Coast Guard unit stationed at this location was the Volunteer Fire Department. This department was part of the Jacksonville Coast Guard District. On October 14, 1938, the Jacksonville Coast Guard District was transferred to Broward County and the Volunteer Fire Department became part of Broward County’s newly established Sheriff’s Office. On November 5, 1958, Lauderdale Lakes became a town underBroward County jurisdiction and on January 1, 1959, it absorbed all of Fort Worth Township which lay within its boundaries. On December 12, 1967 Miami-Dade County formed a new district called “Lauderdale Lakes” within its borders and on December 15th it activated 42nd Squadron (Coast Guards) as part of that new district. The squadron was manned by reservists from Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties who had been recruited for service during the Vietnam War era. At this time there were only 11 coast guard stations scattered throughout South Florida but by 1970 there were 16 coast guard stations located in South Florida alone! Lauderdale Lakes is a small town in Broward County, Florida. It has a population of about 350 and is located on the Jupiter-Miami Beach line. The community was founded by American soldiers in 1922 as part of the purpose of fortifying post during World War I to prevent enemy infiltration into South Florida. Lauderdale Lakes soon became an important stop on the Miami-Ft Worth highway system, with residents commuting to nearby cities for work and pleasure. In 1960, after years of growth and development, Lauderdale Lakes announced its intention to incorporation as a village. On October 1, 1960, voters passed a resolution authorizing the village's creation by referendum. The village had been planned since at least 1963 but only began receiving government funding until 1966 when it was approved by the county legislature. The first buildings were built in a wooded area near what is now Town Center Drive and Northwest Second Street. A post office was established in 1922, and soon there were several businesses including groceries, dry goods, gasoline stations, insurance agencies and more. The second phase of development began in 1967 when the first building was constructed downtown which housed most of the Village's services such as library science complex (now Community Learning Center), health center (now Suncoast Medical Care), civic center (now Parkland Memorial Hospital) and more In 2006 controversy erupted over plans to demolish two historic homes in downtown Lauderdale Lakes that had been standing vacant for years due to their condition - one being listed on the National Register of Historic Places while the other hadn't been touched since 1978 despite multiple attempts by owner/occupant to improve conditions The fight led to one night’s worth of arrests; 23 people were arrested total across all incidents reported during that week
Lauderdale Lakes was originally a Native American town in present-day Broward County, Florida. The town was founded by the Creek Indians in 1824, and it was named for Lauderdale River, which ran through the town. The first white settler in Lauderdale Lakes was Capt. John Pemberton, who arrived in 1827. In 1830, he built a cabin on the banks of the river. In 1832, Pemberton married Sarah Ballou, and they started a family. In 1835, Captain Pemberton approved an application to sell land to Andrew Jackson for $5 per acre. The sale took place on November 3rd of that year. On December 4th of that year, Andrew Jackson became President of the United States. In 1840, James Auld purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) of land at Lauderdale Lakes from Capt John Pemberton for $10 per acre. He began to build a house there in 1841-42. By 1850, Auld had built 2 more houses on his property with additions still being built until 1870 when he sold all his land except one block west to Gadsdenville Plantationsteadowners Wm Bynum and Jno Crouse for $25 per acre In 1865-66 some Civil War soldiers were stationed at Fort Brooke near Lauderdale Lakes when their quarters were discovered to be Todd’s Tavern where General Sherman enjoyed alcoholic refreshments during his march northward from Atlanta towards Chattanooga A steamboat called " Princess" docked at Lauderdale Lakes about this time carrying troops and supplies back and forth between Tampa Bay and Lakeland After Confederate General Robert Egal's army invaded Florida in February 1865 Tallahassee became the capital city of Union Florida under authority granted by President Abraham Lincoln after Gaines' captivity within Confederate lines Governor White appointed Colonel Thomas Dixon as military governor while Major General George Hurlbut supervised operations including guard duty over Drewry's Station Aftermath: Reconstruction period ended with military occupation by Freedmen beginning April 12th 1865 when order was given not to allow arming or training freedmen
