The area that is now Lauderdale Lakes was first settled by the Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. In 1834, a group of English settlers, led by Capt. John C. Stroud, arrived in what is now Broward County and began to explore the area. They named their new settlement after Lauderdale River which they saw as a potential route for travel to Cuba. The first inhabitants of Lauderdale Lakes were farmers who raised corn and cotton. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Lauderdale Lakes when it was described as a "small village." In 1868, a post office was established at Lauderdale Lakes and the name was changed to Fort Lauderdale. The fort served as a trading post and later became part of the military reservation that included present-day Broward County. In 1898, Fort Lauderdale became an independent city and Fort Lauderdale became its second city limits
