There is no lack of history in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. One of the oldest communities in this area, Lauderdale Lakes was founded by Captain John Stonington and his wife, Mrs. Mary A. Dillard on a tract of land that now includes parts of Broward County and Palm Beach County. The community was named forCaptain John Stonington because he first discovered it while exploring south Florida in 1786. In 1843, Colonel George H. Anderson erected a toll road from Fort Lauderdale to Lauderdale Lakes to support military operations in the area during the Seminole Wars. The town experienced a significant growth following World War II as soldiers moved into the area to build bases and factories(such as Raytheon). After the war ended, many residents decided to stay and continue their businesses. Today, Lauderdale Lakes is an important center for education and business in southeast Florida. It has several dozen small businesses and two major universities- FAU and USF- as well as numerous cultural attractions including the Art Deco downtown building (now part of Sun Life Stadium), World Famous Broward Museum (one of only six independent museums statewide), International Drive shopping mall(home to some of SouthFlorida's most popular restaurants), airports nearby(including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport)and more than twenty golf courses.(including one located within walking distance of our home.)
