Lauderdale Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Miami metropolitan area. The name Lauderdale Lakes derives from two early citrus pioneers, James and John Lauderdale, who arrived in 1875 and 1880 respectively. James' family owned most of what is now Lauderdale Lakes CDP; John's father had holdings that included much of western Citrus County as well. Lauderdale Lakes began to form as a community after World War II when soldiers returning home brought their families with them to Citrus County. Many soldiers also purchased tracts of land around Lauderdale Lakes for themselves and their families after the war. After years of growth, Lauderdale Lakes incorporated as a municipality on December 3, 1957. Lauderdale Lakes is located in eastern Citrus County at (29.7609,-81.5607). It has an area of . According to the USGS National Map it lies within the Jacksonville–Miami metropolitan area which has a total population of 941,885 according to the 2010 Census: 827,235 in Jacksonville and 53,385 in Miami proper (the county seat). According to the 2000 US Census report*, Lauderdale Lakes had 706 residents living on 271 acres or 11%. Lauderdale Lakes, Florida is one of the oldest towns in Broward County. The town was founded on December 7, 1882 by A.J. Lauderdale and his family. In 1927, the town became a city and it has since grown to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Broward County. The history of Lauderdale Lakes starts with an early settler named John Sargent who moved from Rhode Island in 1827. He built a cabin on what is now Airport Boulevard and named his land after Lauderdale, England’s most northerly point. Over time, other settlers followed suit and soon there were two settlements at the site: Lauderdale Lakes Village and Lauderdale Mills Colony. By 1830, both had become thriving communities with their own schools, churches, stores and residences. In 1892, A J Lauder made an important decision when he donated 50 acres (20 ha) of land to establish Lauderdale Lakes as a city Limits Settlement for women who wished to live out their full lives within easy reach of their husbands or children’s educations while still having access to essential civic functions such as voting rights and fire protection services. This unique gesture helped make Lauderdale Lakes one of South Florida’s most vibrant cities during its early years boom stage – before automobiles arrived! Families quickly erected homes on this attractive piece of property which included three distinctive neighborhoods: Business Park East (later renamed University Avenue), Highland Hills/Downtown/Meadowbrook Heights (later renamed Meadowbrook Drive), and Sunrise Villages/Hollywood-Northwest Highlands (later renamed Hollywood Boulevard). Today these neighborhoods are home to some of Broward County’s most affluent families who continue to cherish memories associated with this Historic District including fine architecture from local builders that remain unchanged for decades; lively nightlife enjoyed by all; top-notch shopping experiences available near public transportation stops; excellent educational opportunities including world-renowned schools like South Florida Atlantic University – which was founded here in 1949 – as well as many outstanding museums dotting both Aerial Freeway corridors! A few years ago our wonderful City Council passed Resolution No 1 recognizing February 17th through 19th every year as “Lauderdale Lakes History Day” commemorating all that has happened here over the past century including significant moments such as: first African American elected Mayor in Miami–Eddie Thomas; establishment of the Miami Dolphins football team here in 1959; creation ofBroward County Park System; construction of I-95 between downtown Miami Beach & Fort Myers Beach & opening up much needed recreational space along this corridor for all urbanites & visitors alike!
