In 1957, when Interstate 95 was routed through the area south of I-4, Boulevard de la Presse became one of two primary arteries providing access to Daytona Beach from outlying areas; Boulevard de la Presse continues to be used today as a local street name for residents within walking distance of either side of it on pressoil water mains connected to both major highways. During World War II many residents served in military campaigns including those fighting in Europe and Japan; many also took boards or jobs with companies supplying goods needed by troops stationed abroad during that time period. In the 1950s, development recommenced at Lauderdale Lakes with the construction of Interstate 95 and other highways which increased traffic around the shopping center zone. In 1967, Lauderdale Lakes incorporated as a city under state law providing for its growth into one of South Florida's largest communities with over 100,000 residents within 10 years. Today it remains one of South Florida's most diverse communities with significant concentrations of people from Cuba (25 percent), Haiti (10 percent), Africa (5 percent), Japan (3 percent) and Latin America (2 percent). During much of its history Lauderdale Lakes was home to several industries: clothing manufacturing by JCPenney & Co., meatpacking by Tyson Foods Inc., papermaking by pulp mill owner Hudnut Paper Company Ltd., printing by Associated Press Newspapers Ltd.–the last two companies remaining active until their closure in 2006–and retail services such as beauty parlors and department stores like Sears Holdings Corporation before they were replaced by Walmart Supercenter developments in recent decades.
