Lauderdale Lakes is an unincorporated community in Broward County, Florida, United States. It lies east of Fort Lauderdale on State Road 810. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. Lauderdale Lakes was named after General James A. Lauderdale, who fought in the American Revolution and was a colonel in the War of 1812. General Lauderdale's plantation at Sawgrass Mills lay within its boundaries when it was settled in 1916 by refugees from the Haitian Revolution who had fled to Miami-Dade County before that county's designation as part of Florida made them eligible for U.S. citizenship and their loss of political rights granted to Haitians living anywhere in Cuba or Puerto Rico The village began as a small cluster of homes built around a post office established in 1916 by Jens Nielsen and his wife Anna Rasmussen with help from local merchants who supplied postal service within town limits In 1927, general manager George Wessels decided to build a movie studio on Palm Beach Boulevard adjacent to Sawgrass Mills which would become one of Hollywood's most famous film studios . In 1940, he sold the tract that now makes up Lauderdale Lakes to real estate developer Julius Rosenwald for $2 million In 1951, Rosenwald donated land north of town for what is now SouthPark Mall which became one of America’s first shopping malls In 1957, he donated another parcel to create miles long Lake Worth Parkway which runs through town

One of the most famous residents of Lauderdale Lakes was Eleanor Roosevelt, who lived there from 1929 to 1933 when she took up residence at New York City's Warm Springs Hotel before moving to Hyde Park, New York City where she resided until her death in 1945).
