Lauderhill is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The history of Lauderhill began with a small community on the east side of the Everglades known as "Indian Wells". A post office was established there in 1876, and by 1886 it had grown to include a store and two homes. In 1907, Indian Wells became a city after annexation by Miami. In 1912, Lauderhill annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Hawthorne and Weston. Today these remain separate municipalities with their own governments but share some common boundaries such as an interchange on I-95 (the "Lauderhill Freeway") and a park near downtown that has been named for both towns' mayors: Lamar Hill in Hawthorne and Ernest Wilson in Weston. In 1936, Lauderdale County was created from parts of Broward County including what is now Lauderhill. At the same time most of its eastern border changed - from US 1 to State Road 9W - making it one of only a few counties inFlorida without any major thoroughfares connecting its eastern edge to its western edge like US 1 does today. This isolationism may have contributed to Lauderdale's nickname "The Lone Star County" during World War II when many southeastern U.S.-based businesses located there supported the war effort (such as Boeing). Lauderhill was founded by William Lauder in 1837. The town was named after Sir George Lauder, who donated land for the settlement. The first settlers were farmers and their families. In 1840, the town was renamed to Hillsborough because of its location on Hillsborough Peninsula. The peninsula is a natural area that includes parts of both Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1851, the state legislature moved Hillsborough from Tampa to Gainesville so that it could be closer to Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. In 1861, Hillsborough became part of Seminole County and was annexed by Jacksonville. Lauderdale remained a separate municipality until 1949 when it merged with Gainesville. Today, Lauderdale is a small community located about 25 miles northeast of Tampa on I-275. The history of Lauderhill began with farming and ranching activities. The first permanent settler in Lauderhill was James Ahern who arrived in 1837 from Ireland along with his family. He built the Ahern home at 218 N State Road 1 in what is now Lauderdale Heights."Ahern erected two bucolic homes near present day intersection of SR1/SR2 (now US Highways 90 & 9) – one near where SR1 crosses SR2 just south of Polk’s Addition [now part of Sunrise Boulevard] and one further east on CR 337 South which crossed USHighway 9 just north of Old Hwy 27," according to Wikipedia's article on Lauderhill . In 1840, John Waddell settled in Lauderdale Heights and started an farmstead called "Waddell's Ferry". By 1860, all five children had left America for warmer climates: John Waddell Sr., Sarah Jane Waddell (died young unmarried), Margaret Elizabeth WADDELL married Samuel Roe; Nathaniel Fullerton settled down in Australia where he died in 1865; Mary Ann Fullerton finally married local man John Doylebaugh before emigrating back to America around 1880 Finally James Ahern returned to America permanently via ship arriving late 1841 aboard HMS Cerberus whence he set ashore at Key West
