Lauderhill, Florida is a small community located in Volusia County,Florida. It is bordered by Port St. Lucie to the north and east, Boca Raton to the south, and Jupiter to the west. The name Lauderhill was given to it by General James Eads after he fought during the Seminole War in 1835. The original settlers were Scottish immigrants who arrived in this area in the early 1800s. In 1892, Lauderhill was incorporated as a town. There are currently no resident businesses within Lauderhill limits but there are numerous restaurant and nightlife options available nearby. The economy of Lauderhill is based primarily on agriculture and tourism which has been a primary source of revenue for the community since its incorporation into townhood status in 1892. Agricultural production includes crops such as cotton, tomatoes, potatoes, cornmeal, and vegetables; while tourist attractions include several golf courses including one located within town limits (Lauderhill Country Club) as well as several theme parks including Disney's Animal Kingdom and Universal Orlando amusement park both located within easy driving distance of Lauderdale Hills Boulevard. Since Hurricane Irma made landfall on September 14th 2017 over Tampa Bay with winds of 155 mph (250 km/h), many residents have evacuated their homes in order to be closer to safety or take refuge inside temporary shelters set up by local governments throughout Hillsborough County from what appears to be an unprecedented level of storm damage across much of South Florida. Lauderhill was founded in 1882 by John Lauderhill and his brother, William Lauderhill. The town became a small community of about seventy residents after the railway arrived in 1883. The town grew quickly because of its location on the north bank of the St. Johns River, which made it easy for settlers to get goods and materials to market. In 1907, Lauderdale County was created from parts of neighboring Broward County, and Lauderhill became one of its first county seats. By 1930, the population had grown to over one thousand people. Today, Lauderdale County is home to over eighty-five thousand residents and is a major center for commerce and industry. The town's history can be traced back to two main periods: the early 1800s when it was primarily a farming community; and the late nineteenth century when it began to become an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into what is now Florida. During both periods, Lauderhill attracted people from all over northeastern Florida because of its strategic location at the mouth of the river – making it an ideal place to establish new communities as well as conduct business operations. In 1882, John Lauderhill founded what would eventually become known as Lauderhill Village on land he had purchased from James Ketchum Jr., who had acquired it during a cattle drive across northern Florida in 1827. The original village consisted of just a few homes and Mr. Lauderhill did not pursue development until several years later when he met George Washington Smith Sr., who owned land adjacent to Mr. Ketchum's property on Clearwater Creek that could be developed into a large agricultural area with ample water resources available nearby. Soon after construction commenced on Mr. Ketchum's original homestead – which still stands today – other farmers began flockening aroundMr.(later renamed)Lauder Hill Farms which lay east of present day Highway 95 south of downtown Lauderdale Center (now known as I-95). 2 Prominent families that lived in this early period were those associated with Mrs.(later Mrs.) Gadsden’s plantation near Pensacola (now Fort Walton Beach), which operated slave quarters; her husband Colonel James Gadsden; their son Colonel Edward Snowden Gadsden (1820-1899); General Andrew Jackson Davis (1784-1848); Captain Moultrie; Captains Wheeler & Allston; Company A - United States Army Volunteers under Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith (1792-1859), Major General Josiah Gregg (1794-1867), Lieutenant Governor Samuel Janklowitz (1800-1868) ; Captain Goucher & His Party 1786 - 1793 Ft Myers Expedition led by Commodore John Gilbert Goucher(1785?-??) . These early pioneers built roads/canals/roads leading out various areas including Tarpon Springs Road going southeast then northwest along present day US 90E before turning southwest towards Windermere Lake while others such as Captain Fenton built fences along high ground overlooking present day IH 10 east side approximately 2 miles southwest corner between Airport Rd./SR 528 east side opposite Gateway Mall located off SR 441 within walking distance only minutes walk or bike ride away In addition many businesses such as hardware store started up soon afterwards like Wm Hoggs Store opened in 1886 followed by C&D Lumber Co open same year then Joplin Bros ice cream parlor also open right next door this started right near where Walmart is now located down recent street name changed from Airport road EAST too far away from everything else
