Lauderhill, Florida is a small town located in Polk County,Florida. The population was 3,838 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Lauderhill is known for its horse racing and golf courses as well as its shopping center and beaches. Lauderhill was founded in 1892 by George Lauder and his family. The community developed around two schools - the first being opened in 1893 and the second in 1902. In 1916, Lauderhill had its first store - a grocery store which later became an appliance store. In 1926, Lauderhill had its first movie theater - the Floridian Theater which was demolished in 1998 but still remains a popular tourist spot for visitors to see movies on Screen 9 at the nearby Drury Center mall. The town has also been home to many local businesses such as JCPenney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Department Store, Ford Motor Company (later Acura), PepsiCo (Pepsi Refreshment) and Coca Cola Refreshments since it incorporation date back to 1892. There are currently over 20 locally owned businesses with over 175 workforce members employed within the town limits alone! Some notable companies that have closed down or relocated within Lauderhill include Hooters restaurant, Quiznos sandwich chain and Pizza Hut pizza place/pub chain; all obtained closure due to weak marketshare or competition from national chains such as Dunkin' Donuts doughnuts or Wendy's hamburgers nationwide. Lauder Hill is one of only a few towns in Florida that does not have a Walmart Supercenter!
