After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Lauderhill experienced a rapid growth phase, thanks to its strategic location at one of the most vital crossing points between Florida and Texas A&M University (TAMU). By 1870, Lauderhill had more than 2,000 residents and was home to several schools – including both public schools and academies – as well as a number of businesses that supported local industry. During prohibition era (1920-1929), much effort went into developing illicit liquor sales in town while simultaneously suppressing organized crime activity. This combination led to many Nosey zealous law enforcement officers being called to duty full-time; however, this did little to alleviate social tensions or improve living conditions for all citizens alike. In 1929–30 Hurricane Daisy made landfall in South Florida linking Broward with Martin County (then part of Tampa), causing extensive damage across both counties before dissipating over Tampa Bay less than 24 hours later.
