Lauderhill, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. The Lauderhill Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 38,547. Lauderhill is located on the northeast side of Miami and is bordered by Doral to the west and east and Pompano Beach to the south. It is considered to be part of the South Broward area of Miami-Dade County. The name "Lauderhill" comes from two adjoining land grants given in 1837 to Major John Lauder by Colonel James Kenedy. In 1851, General William Booth sold 2,500 acres (1 km²) in what are now parts of Lauderdale Lakes to Major Lewis Hogg for $3 per acre (0.10 ha). Hogg named his new community after himself – "John Lauder Hill". According to one source, Lauderhill was founded as a military post called Fort Lauderdale on November 1st 1853 by Colonel George Washington Smith withhift men from Fort Myers after that city's capture from Seminole Indians during the Second Seminole War. Lauderhill is a small community in Polk County, Florida, that was settled in the early 1800s. The town was originally named "Lauderdale" after Sir Walter Lauder, 1st Baronet of Ardingly. In 1836, the name was changed to "Lauderhill" after General James H. Lauder, Confederate general and governor of Florida during the Civil War. The town's current name is based on its location on Lake Okeechobee. The first residents of Lauderhill were farmers who grew corn and other crops near what is now downtown. By 1830, the area had become a significant trade center with connections to both Georgia and South Carolina. A cotton gin was built in 1834 and became one of the largest in Florida. Manufacturing began to grow around this time as well, with a millinery business starting up in 1839 and a bakery opening in 1840. In 1845, William McIntyre bought land adjacent to what is now downtown for $6 per acre (the land has since been sold numerous times). This site would later become known as McIntyre Park today. Businesses expanded rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to new transportation technologies such as railroads and automobiles which made travel more accessible than ever before. In 1910, Lauderdale-Davie Road was completed connecting Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport with Davie by way of Lauderdale Beach Boulevard/Lake Okeechobee Boulevard In 1925, citrus growers established a cooperative that would spawn many local businesses over the years including several banks and grocery stores along with two hotels; one still operates today as an apartment complex called "The Ritz-Carlton". The population growth led to increased development throughout Prohibition-era Palm Beach County which caused problems for locals who did not have enough housing or access to jobs outside their community while developers built luxury subdivisions catering specifically to tourists or those living above tax rates (known then as "gouging").
