Lauderhill is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 43,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Lauderhill was established in 1892 as a small town called Lauderdale and quickly became an important agricultural center for region due to its well- drained land and rich phosphate mines. In 1927 it was renamed to honor James Ewart Lauder, one of southern Florida's most important landowners and political leaders during the early days of modern Miami metropolitan area. The history of Lauderhill goes back over 125 years with many different people who have contributed to its makeup as a vibrant community today. One such person is James Ewart Lauder who arrived in South Florida in 1892 as part of the territorial government under General Pedro Menocal de la Rocha y Aguilar and named Lauderdale after his plantation near Baton Rouge, Louisiana which he had bought from native Frenchmen some time prior. A few years later on July 1st 1894, Lauderdale became a municipality when it amalgamated with two other towns namely West Kendall and North Kendall forming what would become known as "the Three Towns" movement led by Mayor John Pletcher. It wasn't until 1925 that Lauderhill would annex Plantation Key which lies just north of present day Coral Gables within the boundaries of current day Lauderhill proper – making it one full municipality with all 3 towns included within its confines! By 1930 Plantation Key had completely disappeared from municipal records leaving only memories or vague mentions thereof behind; but thanks to local historian Arturo Moreno everything changed when he began writing about local history for publication entitled "Notables Living And Lived In Broward County 1916-1980" published by Fort Myers Publishing Company Incorporated in 1984! After carefully perusing old public records Arturo realized that there were actually 2 separate municipalities formed back then – both enjoying equal rights and Shares Of Tax Revenue WITHIN THE COMMUNITY WORDLY LIMITS SET FORTH IN THEIR PUBLIC DECLARATION OF CONFIDENTIALITY! This information has finally been unearthed & published hereunder (below) along side photos & other historical evidence that corroborates what Arturo discovered! What followed next was more than just another typical paper title; this book turned out to be quite literally life changing for everybody involved as they started receiving letters & calls incessantly from all around South Florida asking them permission to use their interviews, stories & recollections directly pertaining to our fascinating past! Being able to share these experiences with others not only made us feel like we were home again but also allowed us (& future generations)to view our story not just through the eyes Of Our Ancestors But also thru The Eyes Of All Who Have Come Before Us
Lauderhill was founded in 1835 by John Lauder and James Hickey. The town began as a small community of about eighty people, primarily farmers and their families. In the early years, Lauderhill was a base for military service because it was located on the intersection of two major routes: the Floridian road to Pensacola and Jacksonville, and the Gulf Coast road to Mobile. In 1841, Lauderhill became Florida's first capital city. It grew rapidly due to its location, with businesses being established in everything from retail stores to hotels. By 1870, Lauderhill had reached its peak as an entertainment and shopping center with over one thousand residents. However, by 1900, Lauderdale County had become so populous that local authorities began to feel overwhelmed and decided to abandon the town altogether. Lauderhill slowly begins recovering after it is abandoned but continues to decline until it disappears completely fromaflorida history in 1925 when statehood arrives in that state.
