During the war, the USAF was formed as a result of the National Defense Act of 1946 and was tasked with providing air support for American forces in Europe. One of the first aircraft bought by the USAF was an Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is considered one of America’s most iconic military aircraft and its design helped shape many subsequent planes such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A380. In 1948, Congress passed the Air Force Base Realignment and Closure Act which directed that all USAAF airstrips be closed down and sold off to private investors. This caused a great deal of controversy as many local residents felt their homes were being taken away for an unknown purpose. However, within five years, all USAAF airstrips had been sold off or converted into civilian uses. One of these former airstrips is Gate 1 at Schofield Barracks which has now been turned into a museum dedicated to air force gifts from throughout history. The Leesburg Air Force Base gift history begins in 1946 when the United States Air Force began its program to create a flying academy at Leesburg. The base was chosen because of its close location to Orlando, Florida and its ample airspace for training. In 1951, the first cadets graduated from the Academy. In 1957, the 1st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was stationed at Leesburg AFB. This squadron provided maintenance support for USAF aircraft located on or around Leesburg AFB. In 1959, Headquarters USAF moved from Orlando to Leesburg AFB and the 1st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron became an element of Headquarters USAF. In 1965, Headquarters USAF relocated again when it activated Tactical Air Command (TAC). At this time, headquarters relocated all operational commands except Intelligence Directorate and Special Ops Wing from Orlando to Leesburg AFB. The Tactical Air Command had two squadrons at LaGuardia Airport during this time- one squadron was responsible for providing airlift for TAC operations in New York City and another squadron operated as an air refueling base for TAC fighters operating over Vietnam. In 1969-1970, Headquarters USAF reactivated three Squadrons-the 4th Bombardment Squadron (Medium), 5th Missile Squadron (Missile), and 7th Rocket Squadron (Rocket). These squadrons were assigned to new wings within Fighter Command-the 8th Bombardment Wing/Amey Army Air Forces Base Unit and then Aerospace Defense Command/Air Combat Command's Thirteenth Naval Area Wing (later renamed Twelfth Naval District) which had jurisdiction over Allentown PA & Delaware Co., PA etc.. On 15 Nov 1970 HQ USAAF transferred all assets of Atlantic Test Range - Warminster NJactivation date 14 Sep 1968 termination date 31 Dec 1971 [This activation happened on 15Nov1970]activating command:Commander Atlantic Test Range
Leesburg is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Leesburg is located on U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 95 between Jacksonville and St Petersburg. The community was founded in 1887 by J. P. White as Leesboro Beach on an island in the Suwannee River near today's Bay Bridge interchange. It became a town in 1907 when it annexed two adjacent towns, Easton and Neptune Island, making it one of the largest CDPs in Lee County at that time with a population of over 12,000 people; however, this growth stopped after World War II because of its rural character and lack of transportation links to larger towns or counties within Lee County..
