Leesburg is a small town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg is named after General James Lees who fought in the American Revolution and served as a brigadier general in the Seminole Wars. His home, now a museum, remains one of the most historically significant places in Leesburg. The town was founded on October 8, 1853 by local citizens who petitioned for incorporation because they desired to be within easy driving distance of Sanford and Jacksonville. In 1865, when Fort Brooke was built near present-day Leesburg, residents voted to name their community for its namesake and commander rather than sendifferent letters to different post offices around Florida (due to high postage rates). The first store in what is now Leesburg opened on Main Street on November 4, 1853. The business prospered until it burned down in 1861 due to an accident involving a horse that had been packaged for shipment from Georgia. A new store was built on Third Street in 1865 which soon became known as "The Gazebo". By 1870 there were seven stores and twelve businesses operating within the limits of today's town limits - including two hotels and four carriages barns used by farmers during cotton planting season. By 1888 there were thirteen businesses with over 100 employees; by 1930 only six businesses remained active with fifty-four employees! Today only three businesses remain open with thirty-two employees - but all are involved in retail sales or services related to agriculture or nature preservation! A noteworthy event that occurred during this time period was the opening of Grassy Key Park on July 10th 1915 which provided much needed recreational areas for locals living near Fort Brooke garrison during World War I shortages of land east of Interstate 95! After more than fifteen years hard work by citizens and park trustees funding came through from Congress via bill number 113-4 providing $125,- 000 towards its creation! Today nearly every street corner has at least one monument/ plaque dedicated to this important historical milestone! In 1920 both downtown Leesburg (now known as First Avenue) and Grassy Key Park were closed off from traffic while improvements were made necessary for future military use; following World War II both neighborhoods reopenedalbeit without their original boundaries! Leesburg is a small town located in Orange County, Florida. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. The community began as a farming village on the now obsolete and extinct Kannapolis Peninsula. A post office called Leesburg was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1959. Leesburg's growth came from its location on I-4 between Orlando and Tampa. In 1984, two shopping malls were built there – one by L Brands (now Macy’s) and the other by JCPenney which closed in 2009 after 25 years of operation. Leesburg also became home to corporate headquarters for several food companies including Tyson Foods, PepsiCo, Nestle USA, Coca Cola Refreshments/Fruitopia etc., before they moved out to Sunrise or Jupiter Hills during the late 2000s/early 2010s when those areas became more popular with corporate HQ jobs. In recent years Leesburg has seen some mixed success with regards to commercial development: mixed use housing developments have been attempted but have not yet come to fruition; an attempt to build a large theme park failed due largely to lack of funding; however, a new library complex has since been completed nearby that could soon bring much needed economic development back into town (although it faces many challenges).
