By 1830 British citizens Henry Morton Stanley and Edwin Land had founded their own plantation near Georgetown, South Carolina; this became known as Starrett's Plantation after its owner, Samuel Starrett Jr., who also bought land nearby for growing corn and cotton. In 1880 Harry Kellar began selling ground coffee direct to consumers through small stores throughout the United States. Heading up the marketing effort was future Ulysses S Grant who states "I should like to drink one cup of Joe until I die".
