Leesburg is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Leesburg was Captain James Cook in 1770. He named it "Island of No Return" after his voyages around the world had failed to find any land with similar name on Earth. In 1821, Jeptha Cason built a bridge over the Indian River and founded what would become Leesburg. At that time there were no roads or houses in this area so early settlers traveled by boat to purchase goods they needed for their farmsteads and then transported these items by horse and wagon back home. In 1892, John Witherspoon built a peanut plantation here which became one of Florida's largest peanut businesses. After Witherspoon's death in 1902, his son-in-law Jens Jensen ran the business until his retirement in 1987 when it was bought by PPG Industries Incorporated who continued to operate it until 2000 when it closed its doors due to economic reasons. The plantation property was sold off and most of it has been developed into housing units since then but some sections are still used as agricultural land today.
Leesburg is located in central Florida and was first settled by Seminoles in the 18th century. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who fought in the War of 1812. After Wilkinson's death, his widow donated land to the town for development. In 1907, Leesburg became a city and has since grown into one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Florida.
