Leesburg, Florida is a city located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,710 at the 2010 census. The name of Leesburg comes from two words: "Lees" and "burgh". The town was developed on the current site of the military post known as Fort Pickens. The first settlers in what is now Leesburg were Quakers who came to the area in 1823. They built a small cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town. A year later they erected a larger cabin and named it Mount Vernon after George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia. In 1829 the Quaker community moved to an area east of downtown Leesburg and renamed it Westover after General James Wofford's estate near Lexington, Kentucky. For many years no one knew where Mount Vernon or Westover sat until someone found debris from Wofford's plantation southeast of present day Leesburg during excavations for building construction on Old Fort Pickens in 1907. In 1868 when Waycross Road became part of Lee County there was much discussion about which town would be chosen to become its county seat since both Waycross and Jacksonville had large populations then and both towns had been proposed as sites for Leesburg’s new courthouse. After much discussion by commissioners chaired by Judge William Henningsen (of Jacksonville) angling for votes from their constituents withinLeeCountythe decision was made that Easton should be the new county seat because its residents were more numerous than those in Waycross or Jacksonville; Easton’s location on Uptown Lake made it also attractive as a business center; and its close proximity to Savannah allowed easy access by boat across Lake Cumberland into Tennessee without having to leave Lee County historic buildings still standing today include: The Masonic Lodge (built 1827), Mrs.-Griggs' Store (1830), Episcopal Church (1838), Post Office (1863), First Baptist Church (1868), Methodist Church(1910). However most structures have been replaced over time including: School District Headquarters Building (1937-39), Third Ward Courthouse Annex(1957-1959) – demolished after being condemned as structurally deficient by state engineers; Court House Annex(1963-1965) – replaced with an office complex that included a gymnasium, library, restaurant & bar housed inside an original brick courthouse; Second Ward Courthouse Annex(1967-1969) – replaced with another court house annex that contained administrative offices for both circuits; Civic Center Complex-(1978-1981); and Fourth Ward Courthouse Annex(&1980-) – replaced with yet another court house annex designed specifically for government use which contains meeting rooms, offices, storage & bathrooms facilities etc . . The following are some other notable historical buildings currently standing in Leesburg: Eastern Missionary Baptist church built c1945 - remains active today as a Jehovah's Witness temple services are held every week evening except Sundays at 7pm; Mrs.-Draper home built 1911 - still stands today used as apartments/condo units; Confederate Soldier Cemetery 1922 - includes graves of many Confederate soldiers who died during American Civil War era including Army Sgt./ CoPt Joel Pemberton 3rd TN Infantry Regiment fought under Lt.(Gen.) Robert Ewell at battles such as Gettysburg & Chickamauga.; Hogpen Park 1915 - home of local paper mill owners prior to opening up shop at Hogpen Park Racetrack 1967 followed by hogpen park amusement park open 1984

In 1907, Jock Mahony built his first citrus orchard on current day Old Town Street near where he lived until his death in 2002 at age 95 years old. He also established a famous 19th century horse racing track called "The Palm." Numerous businesses developed around Jock Mahony's orchards including Waffle House (now known as Waffle Inn), Post Office (now defunct), Piggly Wiggly restaurant/bakery (now known as Pringles), and Johnny Appleseed Speedway which hosted many NASCAR races from 1949 to 1984
