Leesburg is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Leesburg Festival of Arts and Music is held every year in early July. Leesburg was founded on a tract of land that became known as "The Landing." A post office called Leesburg was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1923, the name of the town was changed to honor General James Lee MacNaughton (1793-1877). The first white settler in Leesburg was James Hargrave. He bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of land near present-day Ormond Beach from the Creek Nation on December 6, 1827. Hargrave named his new settlement "Leesburg" after General James Lee MacNaughton who had been instrumental in driving Native Americans from their lands along Tampa Bay during the Seminole Wars. A general store and gristmill were built soon afterwards by John Beasley and Wm Denton. They continued operations until 1904 when they were destroyed by a fire which burned down most of downtown Leesburg. For many years it seemed certain that this must have been caused by arson; however no arrests or prosecutions followed up on this theory for many years because there seemed to be little evidence against anyone involved. In 1925, Jock Mahoney started an ice cream business at 920 Orange Avenue in downtown Leesburg which quickly grew into one of America's leading grocery stores catering to local residents with brands like Ben & Jerry's and Dairy Queen as well as national chains such as Safeway and Kroger while continuing to serve customers inside or outside the historic old Post Office building next door where today you can find several restaurants including Thai Town USA serving authentic Thai food while also enjoying views of both Ocean Drive and Plantation Lake all within walking distance! Today L&J's Ice Cream still offers some great flavors like Cherry Garcia Size cones that are significantly different then anything else around here! It wasn't until about 1990 when internet marketing began making an impact on local businesses through what we now know as social media sites like Facebook and Twitter which has led to today’s businesses being more reachable than ever before! Leesburg, Florida is a small town located in central Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Leesburg were farmers who arrived in 1836 and built a cabin on the site of present-day Main Street. In 1838, J.M. French opened a store on North Main Street and soon became known as "the town's leading merchant." In 1845, Wm. Hinton founded the First National Bank in Leesburg and it remains one of the town's most prominent landmarks to this day. In 1867, J.C. Penney opened his first store in Leesburg and it quickly became an important influence in the community - he donated land for what is nowPenney Drive and named it after himself! In 1903, Lillian Smith bought 20 acres (8 hectares) east of downtown from Averill Harriman for $60 per acre ($1 million today). She developed what would become known as "The Park" which included lakeshore homes, gardens, golf courses and more than 100 stores when it was completed in 1927! Today Llewellyn Park contains over 50 parks with activities such as swimming pools, tennis courts/pavillions/football fields etc., making it one of Brevard County’s largest public areas! In 1971 Leesburg voters passed a resolution recommending that Brevard County annex Leesburg into its territory; howeverBrevard County declined to annex because there was opposition from some residents who felt their community was not receiving enough attention from county officials – until recently! Today much of what once made up "The Park" remain but many new developments have sprung up around it since then including: -Leesburg Marketplace -Aquariums at Atlantis -Golf Courses & More at PGA Westchester -Wine Terrace at The Vineyard
