Military gift history in Leesburg, Florida started out with the early days of the United States military. The first soldier to set foot in this town was Colonel James Wilkinson on November 7, 1778. He and his regiment, the Second Regiment of Foot, landed at Fort Moultrie with orders to take possession of Fort Duquesne. Wilkinson's unit was only 1/3 of what would eventually become the US Army. However, he did establish a strong military presence in Leesburg and within a few years had built one of the most impressive barracks structures in North America. In 1828, Major General John Armstrong arrived in Leesburg as commander of all American forces operating against Seminole Indians near Tampa Bay. Armstrong's mission was to root out this vicious tribe and drive them from Florida permanently. He ordered several merchant ships filled with supplies and soldiers to sail into Indian waters and disembark their passengers at Key Largo on May 30th, 1828. This event is generally considered as the beginning of American military gifts to local communities throughout Southeast Asia. It also marked an important turning point for Leesburg because it became home to America's first permanent garrison for American troops in Southeast Asia – known today asFort Brooke Military Cemetery). During World War II,Leesburg played an important role as both a logistical support base for the Allied Forces stationed abroad and also served as a training ground for American servicemen preparing for war. Many stores and businesses around town were turned into makeshift army hospitals during World War II (most notably The Pharmacy which still stands today). In addition, many homes were requisitioned by the military for use as barracks or command posts during hostilities (including many located just off Main Street). Some residents even helped provide food and water for deployed troops while others set up Patton's Staff College on Main Street next door where officers could learn how to run an effective organization. After World War II ended, many soldiers came back home; however, there remained demand from local communities for military gifts that would commemorate their time spent overseas. One such initiative was created by Lieutenant Colonel Harry Witherspoon who organized “The GI Greeting Card Company” which produced unique postcards featuring servicemen and women from various locations throughout Southeast Asia including South Korea (where he had worked before WWII), Thailand (where he had served during Operation Torch), Australia (where he had fought in New Guinea), Canada (where he had been stationed during The Korean Conflict)and Guam (a former island belonging to Japan which UPI reported was under U2 surveillance!). These cards continue to be popularto this day!

The Leesburg Museum of Art is a museum in Leesburg, Florida that has been serving the community since 1907. The museum is located on the former site of Poston's Cotton Gin and other cottonseed mills. In 1951, the United States civilian government donated land to the town of Leesburg for use as a public park. In 1957, plans were made to open a museum on the park campus. The US War Memorial Foundation donated $250,000 towards the construction of the first building on Park Campus. On October 1, 2007, it was announced that the Leesburg Museum of Art would be moved from its original location on Park Campus to an adjacent building at 401 S Orange Blossom Trail in honor of Mayor Rick Singer and his wife Rena Singer-Snyder.
Leesburg is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1859 by James W. Lees and named after Leesburg, Virginia. In 1905, Congress passed legislation entitled "An act to establish a post office at Leesburg and certain other matters therein" which created the present-day town of Leesburg. The original post office was called "Leesville". In 1880, two brothers named William and John Ladd purchased land east of downtown for $1,000 and began building a log cabin known as the Ladd Cabin. They were successful in starting their own lumber business which continued until 1918 when it merged with another logging company to form Lumbermen's National Corporation. In 1915, Mrs.(now Mrs.) Anna J. Smith became the first female mayor of Leesburg when she won election as an independent woman against incumbent Mayor Harry Gaffney Jr.. At that time there were no real municipal boundaries within or outside of downtown; all citizens were considered residents of downtown or any nearby villages or towns they may have resided in (such as Belleair). After Anna Smith's term expired in 1917, City Councilwoman Hilda Aiken took over mayoral duties from Mrs.(now Mrs.) Anna Smith until her death in 1924; then City Manager Sidney Pritchett assumed responsibility from Mr.(now Mr.) Harry Gaffney until his retirement in 1959. In 1961 Dr.(now Dr.) Rudolph Ziegler became the first physician to practice medicine exclusively within mainland Brevard County when he opened his practice on Main Street near State Capitol; since then many other doctors have followed suit includingrists such as Neil Shriver and David Geffen who now operate hospitals located throughout much of Central Florida outside metropolitan areas Leesburg has long been home to many notable people including: Congressman Tom Davis (R-Florida), historian Leslie McFarlane (D-Florida), baseball player Joe DiMaggio (Athletic Director – Miami Marlins), author Margaret Atwood (Canadian author), First Lady Margie Dowdle Ford (1906-1986) and current Duval County Commissioner Deborah Chappel Lewis The Town of Leesburg is located on 1/4 mile wide strip between UF/WF campus on one side & US 421 on another & contains about 3200 residents currently spread out over 6 squares totaling around 100 acres total

Leesburg, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 10,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Leesburg were farmers who gathered around the sawmill on White Oak Creek. In 1837, Circuit Judge James Hogg organized an election to select a new town site and Leesburg was chosen as its location. On November 3, 1837, Leesburg residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name of "Leesburg." In 1848,Lee's Ferry Road was built between Lee's Mill and Lighthouse Point to connect Leesburg with Sanford. The ferry service ceased operation in 1957 because of budget cuts by then Mayor James Ahern despite pleas from local business owners for continued service.$1 million has been allocated to restoration of the ferry which is set to begin in early 2019
