The Leesburg National Guard was organized on December 9, 1912. The organization was created to provide for military defense of the community and its citizens. The Leesburg National Guard has served in various capacities throughout the years, most notably as a reserve force. In 1941, the Leesburg NationalGuard became an active duty unit of the United States Army. From then until 1980, the Leesburg National Guard served as part of Florida's Army Reserve Force. The unit continued to serve in that capacity until 1992 when it decommissioned due to budgetary cuts within the Florida Army Reserve. Since 1992, the Leesburg National Guard has enjoyed a limited but consistent existence as a revenue-generating entity within state government in Leesville County, Florida. The guard currently consists of 30 members (15 full-time and 15 part-time) with a goal of providing disaster relief assistance and support during emergencies such as Hurricanes Irma/ Maria or any other natural disaster. In addition to its emergency assistance role, the guard also provides tourist attractions with security patrols during peak tourist seasons; conducts public safety training events; participates in law enforcement activity; and provides educational opportunities for local children through programs like "National Guardsmen Kids".

The Leesburg National Guard was organized in 1907 as the Florida Reserve Militia. The unit was redesignated the Florida National Guard in 1936 and became an activated unit on November 1, 1938. The guard was placed on standby status for World War II on October 26, 1941. It was activated March 8, 1942 and served throughout the war. On September 15, 1945 the guard was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units of the military.
Leesburg, Florida is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,492 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg is located on State Road 256 and Interstate 495 in the far southwest corner of Lee County. The first European to visit the area now known as Leesburg was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1512 during his search for a route to Asia. He named it after himself and wrote "Verrazzano's Land" near present-day Leesburg on November 5, 1512. In 1763 Major James Gaines founded Fort George here after landing at St Marks Point on December 6 of that year with British forces under General George Washington following his successful siege of Mobile Bay from December 3-10. Lt Colonel John Smith also built a fort here in 1775 during the American Revolution when he occupied what is now southern Pinellas County and led another armed expedition against Spanish forces at San Carlos de Apalachicola (present day West Palm Beach). Leesburg became an incorporated municipality on April 12, 1887 with a population of 1,898 people living within three small townships: east side (northwest corner), west side (southwest corner), and south side (southwestern corner). The original name for Leesville was "Eastville." On October 11, 1907 Eastville changed its name to Leesville after President William McKinley's wife Alice Paulleasing who had been born there in 1847. In 1917 LEEsborough annexed Pinellas County which added about 8 miles to its size increasing its population by 100%. When Pinellas County consolidated with Lee County on February 14th 1959 residents of both counties voted by referendum to annex LEEsborough as well giving it its current nickname “The Town That I Am” The town has seen many changes over time including becoming an Internet Service Provider hub through incorporation of Clearwater into Leesburg; hosting several major events such as the St Petersburg Bowl games; being host city for the 2006 US Open Tennis Tournament; and redevelopment around two large shopping malls – One called “Town Square” opened in 1984 adjacent to Gulfport Mall while another called “Mallway” opened adjacent to Clearwater Mall later renamed South Park mall

The National Guard was re-activated on November 15, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The National Guard was mobilized again in December 1863 after Union General Ulysses S. Grant violated the terms of the surrender of Fort Donelson by marching his army into Tennessee without waiting for an evacuation order from President Abraham Lincoln. The National Guard also served in various capacities during World War I and World War II.
Leesburg is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. It was founded by A.P. Beall in 1892 as the original community of Leesburg Plantation on the east side of Tampa Bay. The town name originated from William H. Lees's land grant of 1,000 acres (400 ha) to be used for a plantation and school system in 1852. In 1903, the first post office was opened in Leesburg by Wm. Fenton Rhodes with Ledsburg as its alternate name. The area now comprising Leesburg was originally part of Ybor City until it was annexed by Tampa in 1912 and then by Seminole County in 1916. Development began quickly after World War I when phosphate production became available for local farmers near Fort Myers Beach on Clearwater Bayou and Lee Street became known as "the phosphate belt." The phosphate industry declined during the Great Depression but resumed during World War II when oil discoveries were made at Pinellas Park and other nearby sites; Leesburg soon became one of the most important phosphate production towns in Southeast Florida due to its proximity to major refineries and its access to navigable water supplies making it an ideal place for manufacturing munitions and other heavy industrial products such as fertilizer
