The Leesburg Naval Militia, also known as the Navy, was a United States naval militia force that operated from 1851 to 1865. The Leesburg Naval Militia was first organized on April 14, 1851 by Rear Admiral John J. Dahlgren, who served as Commandant of the Miami Naval Militia. The organization grew rapidly and by July 1, 1852 had composed an entire battalion of artillery and infantry. On October 5th of that year, Rear Admiral Dahlgren ordered the creation of a navy department in the newly formed Florida Legislature under the chairmanship of Colonel Alexander Burchill. The first officer appointed to this new department was Commodore Augustus W. Henschel with orders to organize a navy battalion in Leesburg for service in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. During the American Civil War, both Confederate and Union forces used Leesburg Naval Militia units for various tasks including infantry duty at sea and land skirmishes ashore against Union troops; however, it is most commonly known today as history’s only military concentration during World War II—the USS Ponce (LPD-2) Battle Fleet being located there throughout its entirety from June 1942 until January 1945 when it sailed into port in Yokosuka Bay for repairs after damage sustained at Pearl Harbor. Additionally, between 1944-1945 an airfield adjacent to Fort Myers Intl Airport was also built utilizing surplus munitions collected from Leesburg Municipal Airport which was then leased to fly Army Air Forces bombers over Southwest Florida during Operation Crossroads; consequently all airports within commuting distance were utilized for this purpose by 1941 when Leesburg Municipal Airport closed permanently due to lack of use.] Today remnants of Port Royal Marine Artillery Regiment #1 still reside on Battery Butternut overlooking downtown Leesburg where they man cannons post along side local police officers stationed at nearby Fort Myers Police Department; Odd Fellows lodge #4 overlooks Downtown now home to Loews Regency hotel while “Old Guard” Building still stands next door belonging originally to torpedo launch station later converted into hospital]
