The Lighthouse Point Air Force Station was established in 1943 as an airfield and storage area for the United States military. The station was used until its closure in 1990, when it was converted into a civilian airport. In 1990, the Lighthouse Point Airport Authority transferred ownership of the airport to the city of Lighthouse Point. The airport is now known as Lighthouse Point Municipal Airport. The first airport on the property was dedicated on November 5, 1942 by Brigadier General J.D. Sutherland, Commander-in-Chief Ninth Air Force. The airfield became active during World War II and served as a staging ground for bomber missions over Florida and other parts of the US mainland. In 1944, radar equipment arrived at Lighthouse Point from Camp Detrick in Maryland and began to be used by fighter pilots flying over New York City during Operation Neptune’s Spear. In 1945, hand held navigation radios were added to fighter planes which allowed them to fly directly into targets without having to refuel or bomb their way home.
