The history of the Lighthouse Point Army Base began in 1892 when the United States government purchased land at its mouth on Miami River. The base was originally named Fort Lauderdale, but it was renamed in honor of General Andrew Jackson in 1894. In 1912, the U.S. Navy built a new naval anchorage on the beach at Lighthouse Point, which served as an important harbor for American military vessels during World War I and World War II. The site also functioned as a training ground for naval officers and their troops. Today, Lighthouse Point Army Base is home to more than 1,500 soldiers and sailors who serve our nation obligations abroad and provide critical support to local communities domestically. In 1911, Major General James Manners founded the First Marine Regiment at Lighthouse Point Army Base to provide basic infantry training for Marines stationed in Cuba during that country’s revolution against Spanish rule. After serving in Cuba from 1911-1915, the regiment returned to Florida with orders to garrison Key West until ordered by President Woodrow Wilson to fight in WWI under Congressional mandate as part of America’s entry into that war on April 6th 1915 The First Marine Regiment landed at Anzio Beach Italy on July 25th 1916 after weeks of hard fighting against incredible odds After successfully achieving amphibious assault ashore they advanced through enemy lines into Vesuvius National Park before withdrawing back upriver under heavy fire

The Lighthouse Point Army Garrison was established on November 16, 1814 in Lighthouse Point, Florida by Major George Washington Cline and Captain James Fenton. The garrison consisted of a detachment of British regulars under the command of Colonel John Nicholson. In 1830, the Lighthouse Point Garrison was re-established as an army post with 1,500 soldiers and officers. In 1861, it became an Infantry Regiment under thecommand of General Ambrose Burnside. On January 15, 1865, it was renamed the 4th Florida Volunteer Infantry Regiment and disbanded on October 17th that year. Today's Lighthouse Point Army Garrison is home to the Historical Museum which tells the story of military service at Lighthouse Point from its establishment until today.

Lighthouse Point is home to several businesses including a lumberyard, boat dealership, fishing store and restaurant as well as many homes dating back to before World War II. After being abandoned for some time due to lack of money and pollution, Lighthouse Point underwent a revitalization project spearheaded by Mayor John Kifer during the late 1990s which saw several new businesses opened up as well as the construction of several homes and a park funding through private donations etcetera bringing much-needed attention to what had been once an forgotten community
