Lighthouse Point is a community located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The name of the town was given to it by Spanish explorers who named it "Huella de Lighthouse" (Point of lighthouse). The first post office opened in 1892 and was called "Punta Gorda". In 1907, Lighthouse Point became part of Miami Beach city limits. In 1962, Lighthouse Point annexed part of Dania Beach and changed its name to Dania Beach Lighthouse Point. In 1984, the town of Herald Heights annexed parts of Lighthouse Point and changed its name to Herald Heights Lighthouse Point. On February 5th, 1990, Herald Heights annexing parts of Lighthouse Point changed its name back to Lighthouse Point again. As a result, both towns have had their names change three times since they were founded. The history of coffee begins with African slaves being brought over from Africa in the early 1800s for coffee plantation work in South America and Europe. When the United States acquired control over Cuba after the American Revolution in 1878, coffee began flowing into Florida from that country; however, because Fidel Castro was running Cuba at that time, no U.S.-produced coffee could be exported until after his fall in 1959 when Castro lost all power to Cuban officials living abroad. Coffee production increased significantly under this new regime as beans were smuggled into Cuba through Mexico City instead which limited supply availability while also ensuring quality control on exports back home. In 1898 Portuguese sailors discovered an island off Haiti called Fernandina Grande (Greater Fernandina) which lay between Jamaica and Puerto Rico - one possible landfall for slave ships trying to cross into those two countries during that period (the same year slavery ended on Hispaniola). A small amount of sugarcane may have been grown thereabouts but it is not clear if any beans actually got picked up by Portuguese sailors or not as this discovery seems quite incidental until well after Christopher Columbus had reached Hispaniola! The first lighthouse was built on the Pointe du Fort peninsula and it served as a navigational aid for shipping entering or leaving the Florida Keys. A second lighthouse was built at Point Loma in 1914 and it also served as a navigation aid for shipping entering or leaving the keys. In 1969, both lighthouses were replaced with modern towers that provide earshot warning to pilots operating flights over the keys from Miami-Dade County Airport. Lighthouse Point was founded in 1836 as a small lighthouse on the St. Johns River by Captain John S. Stevens. The first lighthouse was used to guide ships navigation and protect the coast from pirates. In 1845, the lighthouse society purchased the present Lighthouse Point lighthouse from Captain Stevens for $5,000. The first keeper of the new lighthouse was James Purdy. In 1861, following Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Lighthouse Point became an important Confederate supply terminal with stores and munitions coming in and going out of South Carolina and Georgia. Ulysses S. Grant landed his army at Fortress Monroe on April 12, 1865 to end the war early and take control of Virginia; however, he left Richmond unoccupied because there were no military objectives at that location other than providing a safe haven for Confederate officers and men who had evacuated Richmond before its fall. It is said that one night in May 1865 when Union troops were approaching Lighthouse Point they heard machine guns firing from inside the fortification; soon afterwards they discovered several hundred Confederate soldiers entrenched around the pointloading artillery pieces into Charleston Harbor while they unloaded them onto local boats anchored offshore (the gunfire must have been so loud that it could be heard miles away). Lighthouse Point is a peninsula in the state of Florida, located at the mouth of the St. Johns River. The point is bounded by Longboat Key to the north, Clearwater Bay to the east, and Islamorada County to the south. Lighthouse Point was founded on December 12, 1824 by Captain John Stevens as a lighthouse on an artificial island in Clearwater Bay. The first lightkeeper was George Washington Cranch. In 1827, Captains James Averill and Benjamin Butler built two other lights at Lighthouse Point and Oneida Island. On January 1, 1830,Captain John Stevens' successors in command donated all three lighthouses to the state for use as government stations. In 1848 a new lighthouse was built on Oneida Island adjacent to Lighthouse Point which became known as "The Lady" or "The White Lady". It was replaced by a more modern structure in 1957 which still stands today overlooking Clearwater Bay. The old lighthouse has been preserved as part of Flagler Museum's collection since 1984 and is currently used for tours only during summertime when it is not closed for maintenance purposes. Lighthouse Point is also home to several small businesses that provide local services such as fishing, boat docks, groceries, etc., making it an important stop for tourists visiting the area.
