Lighthouse Point was founded by the military on December 5, 1868 as Fort Lauderdale Naval Station. It became an important naval station during the American Civil War because it was used to supply ships with supplies and ammunition for the Union Navy. The fortifications at Lighthouse Point were abandoned in 1892, and it was relinquished to private ownership in 1907. In 1917, Lighthouse Point was designated a National Historic Landmark. The first lighthouse at Lighthouse Point was built in 1868 by Commodore John Dicken of the U.S. Navy under orders from Admiral David Dixon Porter Jr., Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet.
