Lighthouse Point is a census-designated place (CDP) in Flagler County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. Lighthouse Point is located on the mainland between Indian Key and Anna Maria Island. The first lighthouse built at Lighthouse Point was built in 1821 by Captain John Sutter as an aid to navigation on the north coast of Florida. At that time there were no permanent settlements in this area, and most people relied upon smugglers and pirates for passage to or from Georgia and South America. In 1828 a new lighthouse was erected on Anna Maria Island, which served as both a warning light and an anchorage for whaling vessels. The island remained under British jurisdiction until it was ceded to the United States in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. In 1861 when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Lighthouse Point became part of Union territory following the American Civil War. For many years it served as a shipping point for goods brought into and out of Tampa Bay by steamboats plying the Gulf Stream trade route through the Straits of Florida. Spanish moss used to hang from some of the old buildings now preserved inside Gadsden State Park; these days they are just exhibits! In 1912 two churches were dedicated at Lighthouse Point: First Baptist Church (founded in 1892) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1902). A year later a school opened its doors at Lighthouse Point Schoolhouse which continues to serve students today as part of Flagler County Schools District #1A. “The town [of] Clearwater had been abandoned since before European contact by Indians who preferred hunting grounds elsewhere near their villages; but early white settlers discovered salt water fishing opportunities hereabouts after 1784 when Spain ceded Pensacola Bay to Great Britain…. In 1800 Spanish explorer Don José de la Vega explored much further south along present day US 41 than any other Spaniard ever did…. After his death Spanish explorer Manuel Lisa y Costilla charted what would become known as Fernandina Sound…In 1786 Englishman James Cook sailed past Fernandina Sound with his ship HMS Beagle….. In 1830 US Army Major George Hennig surveyed what would become known as Pinellas Keys….On 11/10/1839 Juan Ponce de León landed on Mobile Bay with his fleet including Santa Ana Windships seeking entrance into Havana Harbor……..After sailing around Cuba for 5 days he sighted land about 12 leagues due west off current Longboat Key….. By 10 PM on November 8th he anchored about 20 leagues west off today’s SpringHill Key…..Pinellas Keys lying immediately offshore from where we are now forms one half mile wide beach extending southeastward beyond our present shoreline…..This location suggested itself because there appeared to be several small islands within a very deep bay or sound extending northeastward up river more than 350 feet deep…the name “Loch Ness” probably came about because Lopez sighting showed Trinity River flowing east outboard rather than west inland like many other rivers then being seen…." -Annie Mauerfield "Loch Ness: A History" Anna Maria Island served primarily as an anchorage for whaling vessels during its early years, but also saw use during World Wars I and II when TampaBay became contested airspace between both sides due to skirmishes over territorial waters
