The fort was completed in 1818 and became known as Fort Lawton. After being decommissioned in 1824, Fort Lawton served as a school until it closed in 1886. In 1886, USS Monitor arrived at Key West with Captain David Dixon Inchbald aboard to repairs an engine room fire that had damaged her predecessor CSS Tennessee. The Monitor continued service until she departed Key West on July 3rd, 1890 for Hampton Roads where she collided with HMS Euryalus off Cape Henry Peninsula on July 15th while they were both passing through Hampton Roads en route to Portsmouth England. Both vessels were lost but HMS Euryalus eventually made it back home safely without any loss of life or damage done to her hulls. It is interesting to note that this collision marked the first time two American warships had collided in international waters since Battle of Lexington (April 14-15th Lexington Regt vs HMS Temeraire). The wreck of HMS Euryalus can still be seen today at anchor off shore near mile marker 22 lighthouse close to Ponce de Leon State Park just south of town limits on US Hwy 1A - all you need are binoculars!
