The department was formed in 1927, and has grown to be one of the most successful law enforcement agencies in the area. Lighthouse Point is a beautiful, secluded community located on the Gulf of Mexico in Sebastian County, Florida. The community was founded in 1906 by lighthouse keeper John A. Stephenson and his wife Sarah. In 1922, Lighthouse Point became part of the newly created Sebastian County and it has been continuously under the jurisdiction of the county government since that time. Today, Lighthouse Point provides peace and solitude to those who call it home. The community features a visitor center that contains exhibits about the history of Lighthouse Point and its residents, as well as displays about local ecology and fishing. There are also several restaurants and shops within walking distance of the visitor center. The population of Lighthouse Point peaked at around 300 in 1970 but has gradually declined over the years due to factors such as loss of jobs in nearby shipyards and retirements among its residents. However, recent development along Highway 9 will bring new life to this quiet corner of Florida.

It should be noted that most police gift baskets during this time period were not elaborate nor did they contain large amounts of merchandise. Lighthouse Point played an important role in the history of both Jacksonville and Monroe County. The station's last commander, Rear Admiral Leonard Boyle, oversaw renovations that made it into a visitor center open to the public beginning in 1984.
