Burritt was a Captain in the Union army and he helped to establish Fort Moultrie on Roanoke Island during the Civil War. He became interested in coffee after traveling through Mexico and Central America where he tasted many different types of coffee. After returning to America, he started to roast his own coffee at his home in Lighthouse Point. In 1871, Burritt moved his business to First National Bank Building which still stands today. His son, John Burritt Jr., continued the family business until it was sold to Starbucks Corporation in 1984. Lighthouse Point is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,986 at the 2010 census. Lighthouse Point is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Lighthouse Point was founded by Captain John A. Macdonald in 1827 as a lighthouse on an artificial island named after him in the mangrove swamp near present-day Fort Pierce. The first post office was established in 1829 and remained open until 1942 when it became part of Kissimmee. In 1886, local residents built a lighthouse on land purchased from the state of Florida for $1,000. The lighthouse keepers lived in barracks on the property until 1938 when they moved to Fort Myers Beach to be closer to supplies and reinforcements during World War II. On October 9, 1888, Lighthouse Point's first beacon blinked light at night while anchored offshore to warn ships of a submarine group operating nearby; this event is generally considered to be the start of modern lighthouses along with Eutaw Springs Light who automated their system in 1923 In 1935/36 USS "Plymouth"s radio operator sighted two submarines about southeast of Lighthouse Point and reported them to Admiral Electric who ordered his ship's gunsaleutters (gunboats)amble up so as not to alarm the submarines which were thought then located off Key West Florida south of Stonington Island . That same year HMS "Cowper" sighted an iceberg west northeast of Lighthouse point and reported it over sound range back home which only servedto add fuel to Admiral Electric's fire On December 10th 1936 USS "Hancock", USS "Perkins"and USS "Sampson" all sighted three submerged objects just east sideof Pt Cloudy Key and reported them over Naval Radio frequencyreplying that if any vessels had been lost or damaged they should notify us immediately .. ..Every day during WWII we searched for our friends Lost Sailors...USS Iowa lost her captain WW2 while underway trying unsuccessfullyto find those submariners she heard talking about..The Coast Guard has also assisted many times with search and rescue missions involving both manned vessels & Helicopter flights since then...A new complex known now as “Gateway”was opened adjacentto Ft Pierce Municipal MarinaIn 1997......Caddo Bay Marina closed its doors due to high water levels brought on by Hurricane Wilma.......In 2007 renovations began on Gateway Complex making it more visitor friendly.......In early 2009 efforts were made backup power source for Lights after transformer went out.........On November 8th 2009 GPS location services detected movement at Gateway Complex.....On January 14th 2010 power went out AGAIN for what seemed like hours........ reopened about 2pm.............Today Gateway Complex reopened with generator backup power ......LighthousePoint is one mile long by one mile wide with a single sandbar running its full length....It started as an artificial island formed from mangrove swamp Material was gathered from between Biscayne Bay & Okaloosa River where there are now several homes
