Air Force Deployed Gift History in Longwood, Florida began with the creation of the Air Force in 1947. The USAF was created as a successor to the Army, and its first mission was to protect America’s airspace. The USAF didn’t exist just for aviation purposes; it also had a military arm. This arm was called the Air National Guard (ANG). The ANG originally consisted of civilians and members of the military who were not deployable because they were too old or too injured. However, over time, the ANG grew more and more militarized. In 1957, Congress authorized the ANG to become an operational branch of the USAF. This authorization madeang available to active duty members from all branches of service who met certain qualifications. The ANG became operational on July 1st 1961 when it became clear that Vietnam would soon becomeanother battlefield for America’s newest military venture. With less than three months notice,the Air Force activated 3 battalions of ANG troops–the 383rd Tactical Missile Wing (TMW), 384th Tactical Missile Wing (TMW-2),and 385th Tactical Missile Wing (TMW-3)–to provide deterrence against North Korea’s growing ballistic missile program. These units were quickly deployed across Southeast Asia to face Pyongyang’s weapons development programs while also providing a deterrent against any potential future attacks by North Korea on South Korea or Japan

Longwood is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Longwood were French traders and missionaries in 1763. They called the area "Pinecrest". The town was founded on September 3, 1847 by Wm. Hargrave and his brother-in-law James Fenton during the Seminole Wars as a post station on U.S. Route 98 between Fort Brooke and Tampa Bay. In 1853, settlers began to arrive from Georgia and other parts of the southeastern United States seeking new land to settle after being displaced by Native American raids and slave uprisings throughout Florida. By 1860, there were over 300 people living in Longwood when it became a state agricultural college under control of Florida Agricultural College (now University) trustees John Sowers and Isaac Eaton. In 1886 LTC moved its operations from Gainesville to Polk County for better facilities due to increased farming activity in central Florida following railroad construction across that region; however LTC would not be dissolved until 1949 when it merged with Gulf Coast State Teachers Union into Gulf Coast State Teachers Association (GCTA). In 1907, First Baptist Church was built on Pinecrest Road adjacent to US 98; this church would become one of the most notable churches in town early on because of its strong preaching presence which helped draw people to worship here rather than at more famous locations such as First Presbyterian or Second Baptist Churches, both located near downtown Tallahassee at that time (). Also built around 1907 was an Episcopal church which served as a convent for nuns who had been working at Indianola plantation near Pensacola before moving southward along US 98 towards Tallahassee (). LTC's merger with GCTA created one of the largest teacher unions in America at that time with over 110 chapters nationwide including longwood’s own chapter (#9), which met every two weeks beginning in 1909 inside LTC’s old building just east of US 98 next door to First Baptist Church (). Despite this large size (~50% of all GCTA chapters), many smaller branches continued meeting outside buildings until 1941 when GCTA decided against having local branches any longer due primarily to financial reasons but also because larger organizations tended towards centralized leadership within their regions (e.g., national conferences). However smaller branches did continue meeting occasionally until 1947 when they finally disbanded along with LTC effective September 1st following an executive decision made by President Franklin D Roosevelt under whose watch GCTA underwent significant changes including becoming an autonomous professional organization separate from government control much like today’s National Education Association (NEA). In 1949 GCTA merged with Gulf Coast State Teachers Union into Gulf Coast State Teachers Association (GCTA). Today Longwood remains home to many descendants of those founding fathers who established this community back East back during the 1800's.....Many residents still live close by proximate Ft Brooke military base where troops have garrisoned since World War II.......Many businesses remain open such as grocery stores/markets/diner chains etc......As well as several churches still active.........................................
