Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Longwood is home to two colleges: Florida A&M University and Stetson University. The area that now makes up Longwood was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Polk County in the early 18th century. The first European to visit this area was Captain James Cook on his HMS "Endeavour" during his 1769 exploration of the southeastern coastline of North America. Cook's voyage ended with his death at sea off Clearwater Bay near present-day Longwood. In 1821, Colonel John Gregg established a Federal military post called Fort Gregg on White Sands Lake near present-day Longwood after being ordered by Secretary of War James K. Polk to do so following the Seminole Wars (1812-1815). In 1835, Anna Maria Cooley married Lieutenant Colonel John Prentice and moved from their native Ireland to live in Fort Gregg as part of her husband's commandant role there during the Seminole Wars; they would later move to long life house #2 on Old US Highway 1A adjacent to Fort Gregg which still stands today as evidence of their stewardship over that location during those years In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 3161 which banned slavery within ten miles (16 km) of any school or church within thirteen months thereafter; this order applied only to areas east of Interstate 441 and north of State Road 714 – including much of present day Longwood In 1870, following Reconstruction in the U.S., General Andrew Johnson ordered all remaining Confederate troops surrendered and all citizens were invited into Union lines; this event marked beginning what would be an eighty year period where African Americans were not allowed full access to American society until passage of legislation culminating with Voting Rights Act (1965) TodayLongwood has become a Magnet for Professional Athletes who have found success both locally & nationally including 11 NCAA teams & 2 College Teams

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Longwood were Seminole Indians. A post office called Longwood was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1975. The name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "heavenly tree." In 1907, a group of settlers from Georgia started a farm on what is now Old Longwood Road. They named their farm after President James K. Polk, who had been born there in 1847. The first store opened in 1909 and the first school in 1911; both were built by local farmers with money they had borrowed from friends or family members for the purpose of opening businesses in the small town that would soon be known as Longwood. In 1945, when Floyd Bowers became governor of Florida and began his push to add more African Americans to Florida's political landscape, he ordered state troopers to remove all white people living within five miles (8 km) of any black person who did not have official documentation proving they were white and belonged to one of two recognized black organizations: the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) or American Negro Congress (ANC). This order led to tension between whites and blacks that continued into the next decade as segregation laws increased throughout most of America following World War II. White residents near black residents often encountered violence and vandalism because they could notidates each other through social channels instead of speaking directly to one another about issues related to their communities—a practice called “thrift holds” because it prevented confrontations between groups that might lead to open conflict or even violence over resources such as housing or jobs opportunities. Longwood's history can be traced back to 1892, when a group of settlers named the Longwoods purchased land in what is now Longwood. The town was founded on July 1, 1893, and soon became a popular summer resort for residents of nearby Gainesville and Jacksonville. In 1916, the first golf course in Longwood was opened, and the town continued to grow over the next several decades. By 1968, Longwood had become an Echoes City with a population of over 30,000 people. Today, Longwood remains a popular tourist destination with active businesses and excellent infrastructure that makes it easy to get around.
