At that time the Coast Guard consisted of a single boat with six men. In 1942, the first cutter was purchased from the United States Navy and given to the Coast Guard by Governor Keyes. This was followed by a second cutter in 1944. The first helicopter arrived in Longwood on October 20, 1969 and was christened “Catherine’s Hope” after Mrs. Katherine Warton-Brown who donated her home for use as an auxiliary hangar for the Helicopter squadron at Fort Myers Beach National Military Park. Since its establishment, the Coast Guard has played an important role atLongwood Harbor. Today there are over 350 members of the Coast guard stationed throughout Florida including 11 air tankers and 3 helicopters which provide Search and Rescue service as well as providing law enforcement services when needed. The coast guard has made many donations to local charities such as Stonington Animal Shelter, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office – all of which have helped improve lives in Longwood area community.

Longwood is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–West Palm Beach metropolitan area. The history of Longwood dates back to 1836 when General James K. Polk established Fort Pickens on the banks of the Ocoee River and named it for his brother-in-law, Colonel John C. Long (1784–1867). The first post office was established in 1837 and within a few years plantations had sprung up along the riverbanks around Fort Pickens. By 1860 Longwood had a store and two blacksmiths; by 1870 there were six stores and thirty homes in what is now Longwood. In 1876, after being appointed judge of circuit court for Polk County by President Ulysses S. Grant, Jno Pemberton moved from Jacksonville to become justice of the peace for this new county which included much of modern-day Polk County as well as parts of Putnam and Marion counties east of I-75. He recommended that Longwood be chosen as its seat because it had "a finely located point commanding an excellent view"of both Lake Okeechobee and Pensacola Bay while also having "a strong local church." On December 12, 1876, Judge Pemberton submitted to the voters proposition requesting their approval to found a town at what is now Longwood with a population limit set at 500 residents only; if all five thousand residents approved proposition they would be given land on which to build their community with no restrictions placed upon them other than those determined by vote from their citizens themselves instead of any outside sources or commissioners appointed by state officials without popular vote or consent! On January 3rd 1861 DeKalb County was organized from portions of Seminole and Jefferson Counties westward including present day Polk County with Jno Pemberton named its first county attorney; accordingly on January 4th 1861 long wood became DeKalb County's capital! After many years in gestation over three different names – First Landing (1836), Indian Mound (1841), Greenhills (1845), Dutchmans Mill (1850) – long wood finally became its permanent name on November 1st 1850 when General James K Polk renamed it after himself – “John Caulfield Park” due to his efforts in promoting settlement near what are today known as Park Boulevard & Old US Highway 9W between Live Oak Creek Rd./State Road 7E & US Highway 192W/Longboat Key Blvd./Pinellas Parkway! On October 15th 1907 Lincolnton Hurricane damage caused extensive damage throughout much of southeastern FL including most notably damages done to Pinellas Parkway where entire southern stretch between Gulf Breeze Dr./Old State Road 7E/USHighway 192W & Live Oak Creek Rd./Pinellas Parkway becomes unusable requiring closure causing significant inconvenience & financial burden for thousands OF Taxpayers! $3 million has been expended thus far thru 2016 repairs!!! restoration will begin next year once validated insurance covers all remaining costs

The community was founded in 1892 by three men from New York City: J.P. Morgan, George Westinghouse and Andrew Carnegie. In 1925, Longwood became an independent city with its own mayor and council system under the name of "City of Longwood". In 1990, it merged with neighboring Plantation to form the current municipality of Longwood-Plantation. The community has been known for its citrus production since it first began to be grown here in 1892. Citrus trees were donated by Governor John A. Smith and Trustee Elias Howe of New York City as a token of appreciation for their assistance in developing Tampa Bay into a major port city during the 19th century when Tampa grew rapidly as a result of trade with Asia and Europe. Today, nearly all of Longwood's produce comes from its two farms - Granny Smith apples are produced on Farm #1 while oranges are grown on Farm #2 - which together account for over 60% of all crop acreage statewide!
Longwood was founded in 1868 by John L. Long and his wife, Sarah A. Long. The town became a county seat in 1877 and is now the largest city in Polk County. In 1904, it was named for General James Longstreet, who had fought in the American Civil War.
