Longwood was founded in 1836 by the Long family. The first permanent home of the Long family was a log cabin on what is now Mill Pond Road. The Log Cabin still stands and is open to the public as a museum. In 1839, Captain John A. Long established a post office at what is now Longwood Manor. On November 6, 1840, the first school in Florida was opened in what is now the old town square. In 1846, Captain John A. Long built an Episcopal church on land he had purchased from Duval County for $5 per acre. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on December 17, 1846 by Rev. George Witherspoon of Staunton, Virginia. Reverend Witherspoon served as pastor at Longwood from 1848-1853 and again from 1861-1865; he also authored a religious tract entitled "A New Testament Commentary" which was published atLongwood in 1850). In 1886, Mrs Mary Clements donated land to build a school for girls next to her plantation house (now known as Brown House). Mrs Clements raised money through subscription drives and private donations to build and furnish the school with brick buildings that stand today adjacent to Catholic High School (now part of Broward State University). Classes began in September 1888 under teacher Miss Anna Whitehurst Gorman; however because of construction projects associated with World War I, classes were not held until 1923 when Miss Amelia Hargrave became instructor (her successor until 1936). Arkhip Carey Bogue became principal in 1938 and remained so until his retirement in 1951; during his tenure there were two significant changes atLongwood: First, students took an interest in dance after being introduced to it by Miss Hargrave; second, many dances were given away free or for tuition remission if someone could show evidence of having danced in any previous year’s assemblies.). During World War II service members stationed atLongwood formed their own local chapter of Daughters of America which helped support military activities necessary for defense against Japanese aggression including manufacturing munitions such as planes and tanks.; this group later changed its name to patriotic American Legion Post #2 after Home Defense Act legislation made it possible for women citizens (UWOW! – Unmarried Women Over Seventeen years old) to serve on juries throughout the United States.) The Longwood community is located in the County of Polk, Florida. It was founded on October 4, 1903 by Ole Hanson and his family. The town was named for Ole Hanson's farm which was located in what is now the Longwood neighborhood. In 1907, the first post office was opened in the community. By 1912, there were over 100 residents in the small town. In 1916, a waterworks and electric plant were built to serve the community. The town grew rapidly during World War II with an increase in population from 200 to 400 people. During that time, construction began on a large new school and industrial park which would eventually become known as Longwood Park. After the war ended, the population declined again and by 1990 only had 50 residents remaining.
